Does the 1969 302DZ motor have the same fire order as other 350 and small blocks??

Steve Shauger

The firing order is the same on all older small blocks but when GM came out with the 3rd gen small blocks (1997 LS series engines) the firing order was changed to 18726543.

Do they run smoother with that firing order?

The revised LS firing order swaps 4&7 and 2&3, which evens out the firing pulse forces on the crankshaft and reduces cooling "hot-spots" between adjacent cylinders; results in more stable idle and reduced crankshaft torsional deflection.

I expect the firing could be changed with little more than a cam swap, and moving the wires. MANY years back a friend of mine had a sbc in VW Beetle. He had a cam that allowed the engine to run backwards, and drive the VW transaxle.
