68 wipers

I got the wipers off my car to check the hidden vin under the cowl.  I was wondering if any one knew what the little clips with the 90* bend in them were for? When I put the wipers back on, one side fit back on the wiper shaft fine, but on the other side the clip won't stay in.  Is there some obscure place that shows a blow up of these parts and how they fit?  None of my books seem to show how the wiper blades are held on in detail.  Thanks.

The wiper arm hub must be fully seated all the way down on the transmission splines in order for the little retainer leg to engage below the splines.

Thanks John.  Maybe I need to clean some junk out to get it all the way down.  I still don't really get how these clips hold anything on.  I'll take another look with the magnifying glasses on.
