Normative Practice was Semi-gloss Black. Over the years the DOT3 fluid dripped and removed a lot of the Delco/Bendix as built paints.

Definitely semi-gloss black. With cheap paint and no paint prep, the paint came off quickly.

And as Joe pointed out the two large surfaces on side and small indented area where stamped should be bare of paint due to machining surfaces after. A semi-flat clear works well to preserve no painted surface.
