Hi crew, happy new year!!   :)

1969 parts - 3954875 is the "short arm", LH side;   3954876 is the "short arm" for the RH side.   See the following links:

From this source, I interpret the information as stating that in 1969,  outer steering arms 3954875 and 3954876 were a part of the N44 fast ratio option.  Standard on Z28, available on power steering (N40) cars as an additional option.  If I interpret the above referenced information correctly, if you have power steering (N40) and these short length outer arms, in combination with the correct length pitman arm, then you also have the N44 fast ratio option as well.  Also, according to the above references, N40/N44 combination is easily verifiable by checking the steering wheel lock to lock.  N40/N44 combination resulted in 2.2 turns lock to lock at the steering wheel.

For example, my '69 RS has, to the best of my knowledge, the N44 fast ratio option in additidon to power steeromg (N40).  I base this conclusion from the information found in the above referenced links and physically verifying part numbers, measurements, etc on my car.  Indeed, on my RS, 2.2 turns lock to lock at the steering wheel.

Hi rich69rs, thanks for the links, a wealth of info there.
I think you made a slight typo with the RH pn at the start of your reply.

I have a 68 ss L34. The outer arms are pn 3902519 and 3902520 measuring 5.25"
My pitman arm has pn 3989477 GMT 86B cast into it and is also 5.25"
Is that pitman number and length correct for 68 L34 fitted with short outer arms? I would have expected the long 5.8" pitman and idler to be matched to short outer arms?

Thanks - I "fat fingered" the p/n for the RH outer arm.  I have since corrected it in my original response above.  Also, attached are pics of the p/n on the "short" ourter arms on my '69 RS.

From what I've read, if you are trying to replicate N44, I would agree with your assumption of needing the 5.8" long pitman arm with the short outer arms.  However, I need to defer to others who are more knowledgeable in this area.

lol!!   :D

Yeah, would love to see some feedback from those with 'quick steering' N44 option or from those who have the books and knowledge - is N44 always with 5.8" pitman and idler arms?
Is the 2.2 turns lock to lock also applicable to 68 with N44?
I can see some issues with steering geometry if the wrong combinations are used.
