Do a favor and tell us if the engine was found locally and what state you are in (you can be vague about your exact location for privacy). This way, the chance of the car still being in the same area is very possible. Recently, I have met 2 guys that both have early Z/ RS's. Both of them! One guy has owned his since 72, the other 73! If this engine is in Washington state, it is possible, but not likely. Whereas if you are in Ohio, I would would put more effort in finding the car.
