hi i wonder ifr anyone out there can help, ive got a unrestored z11 auto ,when the ignition is switched on ,the purple wire on the main junction box on the firewall over heats and starts to smoke ,if i turn the engine over a few times it over heats more and then will not engage the starter, wiring is standard but it has been changed from column to floor shift with a counsol fitted many thanx to anyone giving advise

william

Sounds like a poor ground. Is the shifter harness properly grounded to the floor pan?

Or...when 'juice' (batt.) is applied to wire by turning on ignition, that purple wire is directly shorting out to a grounded surface.

well worth a look ,fingers crossed ,many thanx

I'm guessing short? With the ignition off, try using a meter on ohms setting between the purple wire and ground. You should not get anything ie no connection. If you get a connection, ie 0 resistance, you've got a short.

That purple wire goes from the ignition switch (and the neutral safety or clutch safety switch) directly to the small "S" terminal on the starter solenoid, and isn't involved in any other circuits; somewhere between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid, that purple wire is chafed and/or shorted to ground.

I think I read that somewhere?
