Fusible link wire gauge

Can anyone tell me the correct gauge fusible link to use on the 10awg red lead to the voltage regulator on my 1968? The wiring diagram that I have seems to say that the 10 gauge red wire is reduced to 20 gauge wire at the regulator. Some wiring diagrams do not have a fusible link at the regulator at all. Is the output of the alternator a factor in determining the correct size? The original looks like about a 18awg or thereabouts.
