Does anyone have a recommendation on a cement or other product that will work for this?

 As I recall, the cement looked like rope calk that was pressed down.

 Places like Home Depot. If I remember right it was off white in color.

Yup, that is what I used as well.  Take a hunk, knead it until soft, press it in :)

3M "Strip-Calk" is the same material as the "dum-dum" originally used in the plant for that application (and others).
