I installed a new front spoiler, the support rods are a gloss black and don't look correct to me. Anyone one know if they were originally a dark phosphate color? I can't seem to find a description or picture. George

My car had been in a light front ender before I purchased it in '76, It had a replacement GM valence panel, spoiler in place, but the rods weren't there.   I think it was common that the plastic spoilers were replaced without the rods in body shops, so I don't know how the originals were, but 'phosphated' would seem to match what Chevrolet did usually with such parts.  An OTC NOS part may have gotten black paint, even if factory parts were phosphate only?  Maybe a few folks with original unmolested unrestored cars with factory support rods in place can tell us what they have?  and provide photos?

George, I have had NOS pieces from back in the late 70's and they were all a semi-gloss black or shiny satin black but of course they are service replacements but I bet they were steel pcs. dipped in the semi-gloss black primer. Hopefully JohnZ can assist with what the factory actually used.

Goerge,
Mine are a semi or gloss black. No phosphate plating.

JohnZ

They were flow-coated semi-gloss black primer (same black primer process that was used for all raw metal parts on the Chevrolet side of the plant).

Thanks everyone for the replies, that's good news they were painted because the center rod is to long for my crock pot platter. George
