If someone has an original console with an automatic from 1968 and can post a pic of the black console shift plate that the lens fits into between the horseshoe shifter that would be greatly appreciated.  Mine appears to have more than one gloss of black, higher gloss on the flat ends and side and flat on top around the lens.  Is this correct and should the raised edges show the chrome which is how the reproduction piece is sold?  It is part # 3921804 D55 in the AIM.  I am not sure GM would have gone to the trouble of having two different gloss finishes on this part.

We don't own a 68; but my wife's Camaro is a 69 and has a TH350 console shifter.  The console/shift area looks identical to a 1968 Camaro's console/shift;  except for the indicator, which displays 1 2 3 N R P.  The black plate under the indicator is not painted a glossy black, & its not dull flat black.  Perhaps a semi gloss black, & it is the same gloss all over on both sides.    The 2 parallel "ridges" on each side of the horse shoe shifter  display the chrome on the top of the ridges only.   Hope this is helpful, perhaps someone with a 68 automatic console shift car will verify 68s & 69s are the same.

Jim, that was just what I needed.  Based upon your reply I removed some of the flat black paint with acetone and a cotton ball and under it was the original semi gloss finish.
I now have another part to paint with Sem's Promax  Semi Gloss b!ack
