General Discussion / "DZ" grease pencil mark
October 12, 2017, 08:56:33 AM
I've looked at 2 very nice 69 Z/28's recently that had DZ written on the passenger side head.  Both Norwood cars.

Was this a common thing or another case of someone adding something that wasn't there originally?

Seems like these are getting harder to find.  D & R no longer carries them, they want to sell you polished aluminized now.  I've never known aluminize coated pipes to polish to a nice shine so I'm reluctant.    Heartbeat doesn't even list the tailpipes on their site when doing a search.   Other places I've looked wants to sell an entire exhaust system with it.

Anyone run into this lately?

General Discussion / 69 RS vacuum relay
February 07, 2017, 11:55:14 AM
Any one in particular that is better than another?   I see D&R has it for $70.

I've heard strange stories of vacuum ports being reversed from originals etc...  Anyone here go through this?

Maintenance / Heater control cable adjustment?
January 02, 2017, 01:16:51 PM
The AIM is showing nothing that I can find.  I've had the dash apart 3 times now looking for something that I'm guessing isn't there.
My issue is the fan control switch.  It acts as though the cable is too long.  As I pull it down I get low and medium speed, but I have to force the switch down further for high speed, and then the cable pushes the switch back up to medium.

Cable moves freely, and I can reach the air door that it controls down on the box, it's moving the door to the end of it's travel before I can activate high speed on the fan, so it's keeping the control lever from moving further.  It's almost as if the cable is too long, and I see no adjustment on it anywhere.  I only have to push the control switch down about a 1/2" more for high speed to engage, yet the lever is no where near the bottom of the control panel.

I see no adjustment.....thoughts?

General Discussion / Question on canadian sold cars...
October 05, 2016, 11:41:33 AM
Is there a simple way to find out if a Norwood built car may have been sold in Canada?    Did they all have that odd looking Canadian data plate or were their US data plate cars sold up there?  A list of serial numbers maybe??

I ask because under my original carpet I found a partial excise Canada tax paper.  It's not unusual to find that in an Arizona car since we have a lot of Canadian sun bunnies that live down here in the winter as well as operate businesses.   It just peaked my curiosity as to the possibility that the car may have been sold up there.....or not.

General Discussion / Headers that fit?
August 28, 2016, 10:17:38 AM
I'm not good at searching but so far I haven't found anything that answers the question.   I've talked to a couple manufactures and they tell me either the back drive linkage has to be removed or I hear it doesn't clear a power steering box.  Google searches come up with all kinds of different answers that don't appear to be certain.  No pics, no feedback, etc..

Is there a header that works without fuss?  Without removing reverse linkage?  I'm finding it hard to believe as popular as these cars are, there isn't a header that fits the intended application with factory equipment in place.

Thanks for any insight.

General Discussion / 69 Z shifter
August 23, 2016, 08:53:30 AM
Just a ball park.  What is the going rate for a complete shifter assembly these days?  The rods, housing, stick and knob that is complete, correct, and in perfect working order.

General Discussion / 4-Speed Neutral Safety Wiring
August 02, 2016, 01:49:50 PM
Does anyone have a good picture of the wiring in and around the steering column on a 4 speed car that would show how the wires tie in at the 2 prong column switch?

The AIM is a little vague on the wire diagram.  It only shows an automatic 4 prong column switch with 4 wires attached, yet also shows the 4 speed clutch pedal neutral safety switch wired in with it.  That in a nutshell is a little confusing to say the least.  Unfortunately there is no clear cut picture for a 4-speed car for a 2 prong column switch.

To explain what I have may help.   My clutch pedal neutral safety is wired and working (a pair of 12 gauge purple wires)   I have 4 wires not connected and the terminals have been snipped off.  A 20 gauge pink and a 20 gauge light green.  A 12 gauge purple and a 12 gauge purple with white stripe.

The 20 gauge pink is hot when key is on, which should be correct.  The light green I know triggers the back up lights.  I believe these 2 wires should be connected to the column switch to trigger the back up lights.   The 2 purple wires (one with white stripe)   I believe may have something to do with the emergency flashers (also not working) and may not go to the column switch at all like the AIM shows.....or??

What I can't comprehend from the AIM is how these 4 wires tie together on a 2 prong column switch, since it only shows a 4 prong automatic column switch in the AIM.

A good picture would be great, or a clear explanation, or even a link to a correct wire diagram for a 4 speed and not a generic "one diagram fits all"       I've searched to no avail.
Thanks.

Anyone buy from there?  I seem to remember a few have purchased the adjustable fuel warning light from this place.

I was just getting ready to place an order and thought the process was odd.  You fill the order online but they don't want payment information.  It states they'll just contact you for that via phone.  I thought that sounded a little fishy.  But if others do it without issue I'll proceed.

General Discussion / fuel octane decal
March 28, 2016, 09:09:59 AM
Wasn't there a fuel octane requirement decal located somewhere on Z28's....or no??

My Z has 2 original decals on the core support.  One is the usual emissions decal, there is enough legible on it to determine that.   The other decal closer to the radiator cap is not legible anymore but I can tell something was there.

I'm guessing it was either a coolant decal or fuel octane.

Any help appreciated.

General Discussion / spring weight chart
March 26, 2016, 08:43:12 PM
Who wants to run the math on the spring weight chart so I can double check what I'm doing?  I'm not sure I'm coming up with an accurate number.

69 Z28 with rally sport package.  Console and gauges.   Flat hood and no spoilers, no power steering.  These things I know for certain.

I can't be certain on things like which radio it came with, whether it had floor mats, which battery it came with, or if they consider the original Z radiator HD cooling.

So when I run the math I just assume it had an AM radio and I don't use any of the other options.  I come up with 62 lbs.  Close or am I missing something?

Much appreciated

General Discussion / Suspenion paint markings
March 09, 2016, 07:38:22 AM
Thought you guys would like to see the numerous paint daubs on the 69Z suspension, 12D norwood car.  Hope this might help anyone with a future restoration where these markings usually don't survive.  There are many more than pictured here so I just highlighted a few.  Enjoy these while they are up, I'm having issues with photobucket.

Tore it all down for control arm bushing replacement and ran everything through the parts washer.  Paint marks began to appear.  They'll get a short soak in evaporust for a quick removal of surface rust and some satin clear to preserve them for a future restoration.  Until then they go back into service.

Center link, has a lot of white on it right in the center with a hint of orange left as well.

This is just one tie rod, but all 4 of them had a liberal amount of orange on the ends

Here is one spindle.  A lot of white on the top side and then liberal amounts of orange, so much so that there are runs in it. There is also a small amount of green inside the spindle.   The other spindle was the same with with white on top and a lot of orange, but no green found on that one.

Anyone have a good picture showing the differences?  Maybe it's on the site somewhere and I overlooked it?

Originality / Chamber exhaust, to be or not to be?
February 26, 2016, 04:37:47 PM
Gary caught my attention about a small detail on chamber exhaust and we thought it would be a worthy discussion here.  I'm going to provide some pictures for some questions I have.  Please feel free to comment, I'd like to learn something.

We are under the impression that the rounded exhaust clamps are chamber exhaust only.  I knew my car still had a pair of these original style clamps. I was also told these particular hangers are moved further back on the car to facilitate holding the chamber mufflers.

Now that I look at these hangers closer, they do appear to be bent more towards the front of the car to hold the current crossflow system.  They also appear to me to be mounted back a bit further than what I would normally see on a car, almost above the rearend housing.   It has me wondering, are these hangers originally for a chamber exhaust system??

Here are some pics of the hangers...

Another question.  I'm pretty sure these tailpipes are original to the car, or at least put on very very early in the cars life.  An oddity I'd like clarification on.  Maybe this is nothing but where the tips are cut at an angle, The driver side doesn't come to a point on the top, but rather has the sharp part of the angle missing.   Anyone seen this before?  Maybe one tailpipe has been replaced with an over the counter??

Couple other pics I took that may or may not help.  Original hanger on the driver side tailpipe, and a bottom shot of the passenger side tailpipe.  Ignore the black widow cobweb on the last shot.

If there are any other shots needed to help determine if this was a chamber exhaust car, please ask, I'll do the best I can to assist.

Who is making a good engine compartment harness nowadays?  Heartbeat?  Ricks?  Other suggestions?

I'm not too worried about what color a certain plastic connecter might be, but I do want a harness that represents the original that functions correctly with plastic support clips and such so it fits as it should.

Any help appreciated,
Larry

Originality / 69 RS parking lights
February 09, 2016, 05:34:50 PM
For some reason it sticks in my head that GM stopped putting the stainless trim around the front parking lights on the RS at some point during production.

Is there a time frame for this?  Or is my memory fuzzy.

Thanks

Garage Talk / 571 CI Dyno session
February 09, 2016, 03:28:39 PM

This is an engine my father had Tony Bischoff build for his Pontiac.  Pump gas street car, aftermarket block, Ohio 4.750" crank.  Hats off to Tony, we had about 4 weekends of dyno time on this engine until Tony was happy with it.  This was one of the earlier sessions experimenting with carbs and timing.  Engine safely goes to 7,000 but peak HP was found at 5700 so pulls were kept to 6,000.  Torque never dips below 700 for the entire pull.  It's a ball on the street.

Garage Talk / 6.0 LS 72 blazer
February 04, 2016, 06:14:34 PM
Since we seem to be discussing other things I'll throw one in the mix for giggles.  Hopefully I don't get banned for non Camaro stuff.   Well technically there is a Camaro in the video that doesn't fare too well.
This is my 72 Blazer 4x4.  I did a 6.0 LQ4 swap in this one, I built the 4L60E behind it, installed 3.73's and run 33" tires on it.  Engine is stock with my custom SD tune in it.  It ran so good I just had to take it to the track.  I'm racing a (brand new at the time) 2010 SS Camaro and left him scratching his head.  Boy did he get razzed in the pits after this race  ;D

If this isn't beyond the rules, I'll post the dyno session for the 571 cubed Pontiac Tony Bischoff built for my father.

General Discussion / Power steering
January 27, 2016, 07:41:43 AM
Anyone possibly have a good picture of the correct routing of the power steering hoses on a 69 Z they wouldn't mind posting?

Over the weekend I've seen some very nice 69 Z's and it struck me as odd that some hoses were routed down behind the driver side motor mount, along the oil pan and up to the PS pump, while others were right there on the frame front and center, straight from the box to the pump.

Decoding/Numbers / Hurst shifters
January 13, 2016, 01:25:21 PM
I'm sure this has been gone over, but a search didn't yield me anything useful.

I've found 2 hurst comp plus shifters in my stash, and I believe them both to be original OEM, they both have molded in rubber inserts for the shift rods, round push in handles etc....

I was hoping someone here could tell me how to read this date code and possibly there is a hint as to applicaton?

1st one...   890432M

2nd one...  1280D31D

I think the second one is a late 68 application for the 69 model year?   Maybe the first one is a later 69 application?

Thanks

Simple question, were the 69 radio knobs all chrome or black with chrome trim?  I see the restoration houses offer them in both versions.

General Discussion / Question on deluxe door panels
December 12, 2015, 08:02:34 AM
My 69 is originally equipped with white deluxe houndstooth, still original and unrestored and intact.  I've had a complete deluxe interior kit wrapped up for years, I had planned to replace all the interior.  I unpackaged it the other day to find out the deluxe door panels have black carpet along the bottom.

My original door panels on the car have a houndstooth pattern along the bottom that matches the seat inserts, it's not black carpet.

I never really paid that much attention to it until now.  I'm pretty certain this interior has never been tampered with.  So which is correct?

I've looked around at door panels and can't seem to find them with houndstooth on the bottom.  Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks.
