Originality / PF25 or 29 oil filter for 68
October 02, 2009, 12:06:43 PM
Just saw this on ePay and was wondering if there's any truth to it?

According to my 1968 dated GM parts book,a PF29 or 6437946 is the first spin on

oil filter for all 68 models Impala Nova corvette chevelle camaro with V8 engines

327 396 427.  Pf 25 came out in 1969 so would NOT be correct.

May 31, 2009, 11:33:43 AM
Anyone know the original PN for the u-joint in a 68 with M20?  Also what it changed to through the years?
I had 7806140 in my notes but that joint is HUGE compared to what's on the car...could you let me what the heck that number is for too???
Thanks!

Originality / Tie Rods
April 02, 2009, 08:16:14 PM
Has anyone seen this before?  I was cleaning up my original tie rods to restore and noticed the center where the zerk fitting is was painted black!  I lightly cleaned the one on the right first & just started the one on the left (you can see where the paint is just starting to flake off) and figured I'd better go grab the camera!  And YES, it's paint not dried up caked on grease.  Is this how they were from the factory?  No other signs of black paint anywhere, only the orange inspection marks from forging.  All the NOS ones I've seen were plain steel.  Also, pretty sure the outer is a replacement from the numbers stamped in the center and the zerk fitting but could someone confirm that too?  Notice that center is black also but doesn't look like paint?

Decoding/Numbers / Born on day?
February 22, 2009, 03:24:34 PM
So I know it's impossible to nail down the exact day on which our cars rolled off the assembly line, I've done the research, but would like to get some educated guesses.

Year: 1968
VIN: 320097
Plant/Body#: LOS 19362
Body Build: 12D
Body Scheduling: M093

I came up with 12/26/67 ???  What do you all think?  Did I miss a data point?

And if this is not the right place to post this, MODS please move!

Thanks!

Originality / Pitman Arms
January 30, 2009, 02:28:56 PM
Ok, I've seen David's site, searched everywhere, but still confused because I'm finding conflicting info or maybe I'm just not getting it so please forgive me!  Could someone please tell me exactly what pitman arms go to what application for 68 cars????  I'm specficly looking for right number for 68 PS, on a SS car (quick ratio, long arm I assume? - and if anyone has one for sale please let me know!!!)

Something formatted like this would be great if it's not to much to ask, and looking for the forging numbers:

68 PS standard 39xxxxx A or B
68 PS quick ratio (SS, RS) 39xxxxx A or B
68 PS special (Z28) 39xxxxx A or B

Keep seeing 3953219 listed for both PS & MS.  I know there ones with A & B after the number, is one for PS other for MS?
Also on Davids site, 3908391 is listed as 67 PS long fast ratio 5.8 but I see everywhere else it's a MS arm?
Last question, were these painted gloss black factory installed or bare cast iron?

HELP PLEASE!!!  Thanks guys!!! :)

Restoration / Dipstick finish
January 07, 2009, 07:24:43 PM
Can anyone confirm what finish the top portion (where you put your finger) is supposed to have and is it the same for the collar that goes over the tube?  Thinking gray phosphate on both?

Originality / 68 Lower Ball Joints
April 29, 2008, 12:14:48 PM
Can someone tell me if these lower ball joints have the correct appearance for a 68 Camaro?  I think this is a second design as I think my originals had a flat flange that was the stop against the bottom of the control arm.  If these are not correct can someone post a pic of what the originals looked like?  Hate asking but I tossed my originals (like an ass) when I replaced them the first time with common Moog parts.  Also any info on how the "exact" repops really compare in appearance to what the car came with would be appreciated.
Thanks Guys!

Decoding/Numbers / 5460346 Master Cylinder
March 28, 2008, 01:01:08 PM
Is there a date code on the 5460346 master cylinder?  All I can find is the D4 stamp.  If so where is it located?
I've seen the CRG report - Chassis - Suspension, Axle, Brakes, & Wheels but it didn't mention anything about date codes.
Thanks in advance!

Anyone got the repops with the rivets?  Who made them (MFG) and what do you think of them?  Post pics if you can.  I need to get a set and I know there's a few companies making them and want to get the "better" set.

THANKS!!!

Maintenance / Flat spots on Bias-ply tires
January 07, 2008, 09:46:19 PM
Anybody know a good way to get flat spots out of bias ply tires?  These are Coker redlines about 2 years old and about 5 miles on them.  Sat for maybe 4 months at 32 PSI and all have flat spots now.  Remember hearing something about over inflating them?  If so to what PSI and how long?  If not any other suggestions???
Thanks, Chris.

Originality / Correct Starter Motor
January 03, 2006, 09:56:29 AM
Anyone know the correct starter # for a 12D 68 Camaro 396/325 M20?  Think it is 1108418 but have been looking for a while now and can't seem find one (ANY) that are dated 67.  All seem to be very late 68 into the 70's.  Am I chasing a ghoast or what???
Thanks Chris!

Originality / Black Firewall Paint
November 16, 2005, 11:50:47 AM
Here's a question I would like to get a lot replies on.
I have a 68 Sequoia Green SS 12D build car that I am the second owner of, was purchased from an estate sale where the original owner was a construction company owner and had passed in an crane accident and the estate was tied up for 15+ years and the car just sat.  The car was mostly original when purchased, T3's still working, all original interior without a tear (seat foam just rotting), even had original belts and hoses on the engine.  The car was repainted once (outside only-all paint in door jams, under hood, cowl area, under trunk original-you could see the tape lines) due to an accident that took out the drivers fender and door and the original vinyl top was removed. Someone also went through the engine compartment with black spray paint too because there was overspray on everything including the dirt and grease.(I guess in an attempt to pretty it up for the sale)  Some things were changed like shocks, tires, antenna, exhaust, plugs, wires, cap & rotor. Here's the thing, my firewall/bottom side of hood was NOT painted black but was body color so when I restored her, I did not paint the firewall/bottom of hood black but had to have the tail pan black so that's what I did.  I have been questioned several times about it and KNOW I read somewhere (never to be found again) that certain colors did not get the black-out treatment due to an enamel/lacquer mismatch.  I also was told by a reputable person at nationals that it was incorrect even after the above explanation.  I have photos of factory crayon marks that ran under the blower cover and numerous pic's of the firewall during teardown all showing body color, no black except for some little spots where there's overspray from the fool with the spraybomb.
My questions are;
Am I correct about the paint mismatch or did I dream that?
Did certain color cars come from the factory with body color firewalls?
Does anyone else have a Sequoia Green SS where the firewall is NOT painted black?
Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank's in advance, Chris.

Originality / Spiral Shocks
November 15, 2005, 10:30:51 PM
Originally posted this in Team Camaro but never got a definitive answer so I thought I would try here.

Curious if someone knows the correct original part numbers for the shocks that would have come on a 68 SS 396/325 with a M20? I have been finding different info in all my books and manuals. Thinking 3192477 & 3192851 but have found some sources saying 3192826 & 3192831??? What Gives??? Please help!!!!

Also, I know when you ordered the SS you got what's referred to in books as a "special suspension" with the SS package. Am I correct in assuming that was the F41 package and if so did the shocks follow that or still varied with other options i.e. AC/engine/whatever?

Thanks!!!
