Restoration / Black out tail pan BB 67 IPC
February 07, 2016, 01:04:37 PM
Hello,

I'm getting ready to paint my BB O-1 1967 Indy Pace Car and would like some input. The issue I have is that my car is a 396 and not the 350 but has the exact same RPO build as the pace cars sent to the Indy Zone for IMS commitment activities. Its not a commitment car because it doesn't fit the criteria being a 396 and was produced the 1st week of April. The NCRS says the car was delivered to the Indy Zone and it has the vin delivery stamp etc. Basically the TT reads exactly like the actual two pace cars would have if the were not a refit from 4P L78 cars but factory built the way they paced the race. I plan to black out the tail pan and I'm sure I will get into lots of lengthy conversations about the combo of identifiers once I start showing. I just thought I would bounce it off you guys first.

Thank you.

Restoration / 68 fender support shield?
June 02, 2009, 12:14:42 PM
I took this off a 68 when doing a restoration a few years back. It was attached to the driver side fender support brace at the lower mounting holes. It had the remains of a rubber skirt but now only has the staple. Does anyone know the application for this piece and if its even original to camaro? I can't find it in the AIM. I'd also be interested to know what the rubber skirt looked like?

Originality / No radio.... need ground straps?
February 24, 2009, 10:36:43 PM
A radio was not ordered with my 68 L78 so would the engine compartment still have radio ground straps? What about noise filters? I expect an "adda boy" for correctly wording my question :)

I've attached a couple shots of the radio plate and cardboard speaker hole cover for those who are interested. The sliver of black cloth tape shown with the radio plate is what was used to hold the cardboard speaker cover in place. Although it gave up holding years ago!

Originality / Bracket on X77 frame rail

I was going through some photos I shot of my X77 and was wondering what this bracket might have been used for? Its on both rear frame rails.

Restoration / 67 vs 68 engine harness route
December 23, 2008, 02:22:57 PM
Was their a direct cut off of the engine harness route i.e. behind the inner fender vs engine compartment side of inner fender?  The 67 ran behind the outer and inner fender and the 68 was connected to the inner fender by fasteners on the engine compartment side but was the change directly model year specific?

Restoration / rear wheel well drain plugs
December 15, 2008, 09:12:14 AM
OK, kind of a stupid question that I should know but I dont have another car to look at currently. The drain holes in the in the rear outer wheel openings ar plugged with plastic or rubber plugs? Same question for the rear drop off drain plug?

Does anybody know what this event was all about? It's on the windshield of my 69 Z28 and I was curious.

Originality / A.I.R on 4053 Holley
November 24, 2008, 01:39:46 PM
I've run out of vacum ports on the 68 L78 4053 to hook up the signal hose to the diverter valve. The A.I.R system is inactive but I need somewhere to run the hose?

Originality / Deep groove idler pulley
November 19, 2008, 01:30:03 PM
Did my 68 L78 originally come with a deep groove idler pulley from the short water pump to belt? Someone told me it was used on high performance big block camaros in 68. I've not seen one before and I've heard they are hard to come by?

Decoding/Numbers / Radiator decode
November 19, 2008, 10:19:18 AM
The radiator that came with my 69 Z28 has a right tank O D code with an H date. That would be a 68 SB code in August. The left side is coded I A not IH as it should be. Any idea what its from or should it be tossed in the scrap heap.

Originality / X77 cowl hood/spoiler
October 28, 2008, 03:35:07 PM
I'm about to start restoration on my X77 and was wondering if it was a good idea to have Jerry authenticate it before I start to pull it apart and strip the paint? I first thought that it wasn't necessary because its a NOM car but it does still have original paint and is spoiler, and cowl hood equiped and a desireable 720 72 72 Hugger combo. Would the original paint confirm those options and if so are they rare enough to add value to the car even if it's without the original DZ? Its a May built X77 without the D80 designation. It's also a non console tach & gauge car.....weird order.

Originality / Right hand mirror
September 24, 2008, 10:42:21 AM
What's the scoop on the first generation right hand exterior mirror application? I've seen several and have had a few on my cars as well but running through the factory RPO list they were only available as Dealer ad's. I see most of them on 69's and was wondering if many were added due to Fed regulations? I remember it being an issue from my youth where my parents had to add one to stay legal on their older cars.

Decoding/Numbers / 69 LOS L48 ID
September 16, 2008, 04:32:06 PM
I looked at this car over the weekend. It has a 388 cast block, BM 0813 axel, TH 350 and factory A/C. I couldn't see the partial at the rough casting as usual it was too difficult.  Should I exppect to find it there during this time period at LOS?

Originality / 68 L78 Distributor Cap
August 24, 2008, 12:09:23 PM
Anyone know if I should use a Delco dark brown cap with the copper contacts on my 68 L78?  I also have the regular black Delco cap if that was original?

I'm putting an NOS set of stack style hood louvers on my 68 SS. I've noticed that some of the old date boxes have a different color combination than the latter GM and those sold reproduction. What was original?

Early old box NOS are pewter gray painted insets and silver backing plate.

Later NOS are black painted insets and black backing plate.

Originality / 68 L78

I'm putting an 1100814 alternator on my 68 L78. Right or Wrong? Its called out for the 302 by Colvin for 68 but no mention of the L78.

Decoding/Numbers / 69 X77
March 03, 2008, 04:57:56 PM
I bought an 05C X77 720 72-72 car this week. It has no console, guages, tac, or center fuel gauge. A real plain jane except its really ORANGE and has the rosewood dash. It does have front and rear spoilers but not the D80 on the cowl tag? I just wanted to be sure it was factory spoiler equiped by the third week of May? It does have a cowl hood but I've read it's unlikely its original via the low production totals so my plans are to switch to the flat hood. With the lack of RPO's this car has I think it would be fitting to keep it simple since I wont be competeing for attention with the X33 RS cars anyhow :) But I think it will look sweet next to my Z11.

Body 321319
VIN 6443XX

Decoding/Numbers / PBT paper tags
January 07, 2008, 02:29:14 PM
I found this under the seat of a 69 I just bought. It includes a blue P that reads PAINT, a black B that reads BODY, a red M that reads MECHANICAL, and a Red R.T. with no wording.  I'm guessing they are inspection tags. Just thought I'd share with others who I know take the time to pull the little scraps of paper out of a nasty ole rats nest for fun :)

General Discussion / Lordstown Ohio
December 27, 2007, 07:55:59 PM
What kind of resources did GM have at the Lordstown facility in 1967? If I'm correct it was opened in 1966 as a new facility? Would it have had any special tech or engineering departments?  I've also heard that Lordstown had a railroad shipping depot called "the space center" that was a centralized shipping location for both Norwood and Lordstown GM products? Would Norwood products have been shipped here before the final dealership destinations were scheduled?

Originality / Stripe color for 68 0-6
September 21, 2007, 12:11:43 PM
I just want to be sure I'm doing the right color stripe combinations for my two 68 SS 0-6 Corvette Bronze\white vinyl top combinations. I read where three color combinations were effected by top color regarding the stripe applied in 68 but could not figure out from the table provided what combinations those are? I've already painted the stripe black on one but am in the paint booth now on the second car and would like to be certain I dont make a mistake twice. Both of these cars had black stripes when I bought them but both had been painted before so I'm not 100% certain?

Decoding/Numbers / block decode
August 26, 2007, 01:38:45 PM
Can anyone make sense of this 010 block with a C119 cast date? This thing runs from one edge of the pad to the other and is sitting in my neighbors 68 ragtop vette.... 111539830K 04 22 CGC

The car has original M20 partial vin stamped to the car and an MK 9 radiator tag with an L tank code. Manual steering box and four wheel disk with DK master non assist. I believe it was once a factory A/C small block car so would this make sense? It also has 3/8th inch fuel line with return that has been now shut off to run a Holley and a 6 grand tac. Thanks for any input :)

Decoding/Numbers / Cowl tag rivet sealer
July 26, 2007, 04:29:13 PM
I was wondering about some of the variations I've seen on cowl tag rivets. I've seen some hollow and some that ooze while others are smooth and clean. I'm sure that many were cleaned up over the years during restorations and such. I noticed on my Z11 that it looks like a brush was used to wipe away the excess. I guess it depended on what the Fisher employee was feeling like doing that particular day and how detail oriented he/she was?

Decoding/Numbers / 68 MQ stamp & VIN

I finally got a camera that will take a clear shot of stamp pads and such. Here's the MQ in my 68 L78 for your data base.
