Decoding/Numbers / master cylinder casting number
February 26, 2015, 07:18:28 PM
According to the CRG article on master cylinder a 68 manual brake should have a master cylinder with casting number 5452310( without bleeders) and power should be 5460465(with bleeders).
On my car 4 drums power I have a 5352310, also if you look at the picture on the CRG article you see a picture of a master cylinder attached to a booster without bleeders !! Can somebody shine the light on that one ?
thanks

Maintenance / front end noise
September 11, 2009, 11:30:34 AM
Hi everyone,I have a grinding sound when turning front wheels at slow speed or turning when stopped.

I greased the whole front end twice during the summer.I don't see anything loose or worn out rod ends etc.

I suspect steering box.it's a power steering.any suggestions what to check next or how to check or adjust steering box?

thanks in advance.

Maintenance / smelly exhaust gases
May 26, 2009, 12:59:14 PM
Hi guys, need some input here, exhaust gases smell smell pretty strong on my 68 327.to the point that myself and other occupants in the car still stink like "bad exhaust smell" after riding in the car even  after just a short drive. There is no blue smoke coming out from exhaust pipe.

Here's my set up: 327-210,bore .030,40 000 miles since rebuilt, compresson all within 15psi ,mild cam I believe its a tp 236,new r45s spark plugs 035 gap, breakerless stealth edition electronic ignition in original distributor(engine use to smell with my old ignition accel system),Vacuum advance to full vacuum, new plug wires,
original carb 2gv (rebuilt),original intake manifold, original exhaust manifolds,Gardner exhaust sytem.

Where I live we need to pass an emission test to license your car.Wich I pass. Here's some numbers:
On Driving test,Hydrocarbons PPm 183,carbon Monoxide % .22,Oxide of Nitrogen PPm 771
On Idle test,Hydrocarbons PPm 711,carbon Monoxide % 1.25

Since then I adjusted the carb richer now the engine idles better and the smell is not as bad as it use to be but still bad.I don't think I can go any richer.

what timing do you recommend?

any suggestion?

thank you.

Are there suppose to be some shims between alternator bracket and water pump and on the intake manofold on a 327 1968 no A.I.R. no a/c (n40)?
It does not show any in AIM p.79 but I want to put back original exhaust manifold with alternator bracket but it does not line up with pulleys  ???

Decoding/Numbers / 3927183 intake manifold
May 29, 2006, 05:07:56 AM
according to "chevrolet by the numbers" book, the 2 barrel intake manifold casting #3927183 was used  in 1969 and 1970 model year in 307 and 327 engine.

Now, my car is a late 1968 (07c)with 327,the casting on the intake manifold is 3927183 and the date code is G98.for july 9th 19_8.well I'm thinking 1968.Has this been seen before?and is this conclusive enough for to think this is the original intake for my car?

according to the book it should had been a 3919801 or 3960363 intake.see what you guys think...
