Decoding/Numbers / 67 Tag Decode
March 26, 2024, 09:29:40 AM
Local dealer has this 67 convertible on his lot. I'm not too familiar with 67's. Looked at decode info on site and think I have it, but don't want to give him bad info. It' red, black top badged as SS, original motor gone. Insite? Thanks

Decoding/Numbers / Rear axle code question
December 27, 2023, 10:29:46 AM
I'm a little confused by the coding on this rearend. Maybe I'm reading the charts wrong. The casting reads C289 (March 28 69). The housing stamp reads C  BL 0120G2 (3.07 open January 20 Detroit 2nd shift) right? And why the C in front?

Maintenance / Fan Clutch issue?
June 27, 2023, 09:04:22 AM
I have a stock 69 Z-28 cooling system with all components as original with the exception of the removal of the smog pump, now using a shorter 7440 XL gates belt. Was having a heating problem at low speed and idling in hot weather conditions. The fan clutch was an Eaton unit purchased over the counter from GM in the 70's. Noted that the fan would free spin for many revolutions after engine shut down with a warm engine. Determined that the fan clutch was faulty and sent it to a respected restorer/rebuilder for overhaul. Received it back and overheating issue went away. Now I am noticing squealing which I believe is belt slippage above 4500 RPM. Belt has been replaced and is tensioned properly; all pulleys appear to be in good condition. I am suspecting that the fan clutch is not disengaging properly causing high belt loads at high RPM. In John Z's cooling article, referring to fan clutches he stated, "most of them essentially disengage over 3500 RPM" Sorry this is so long. Any thoughts?

November 06, 2021, 09:55:49 AM
I have the original spark plug wire brackets (the stands that bolt to intake manifold) for my car. They've been painted orange in the past, what was the finish originally? Also the PCV elbow pipe in the left valve cover, semi-gloss black?

June 08, 2021, 09:06:20 AM

Originality / 1969 radiator finish
March 19, 2021, 10:11:17 AM
Had my radiator redone by a reputable restorer and it came back finished in a sheen I would say leans more towards semi-flat than semi-gloss. Most I've seen are glossier than mine now is. What finish is accepted as correct? 1969 Z-28. Sorry if this has been addressed many times before tried a search and wasn't successful in getting an answer.

General Discussion / Throttle lever orientation?
January 02, 2021, 07:46:14 PM
I'm changing my throttle linkage from the six cylinder/crossram cable style to the V-8 lever set-up. I'm installing the lever and consulted the 69 AIM, it appears the show the arm installed with the offset towards the left or drivers side of the car. The arm seems to be too far over and interferes with the washer pump. Looked at my son's 67 and it is installed with the offset the other way. Is the illustration a misprint (item 11 Lever) in attached?

Maintenance / Spring in lower radiator hose?
May 12, 2020, 10:27:05 AM
I purchased a new NAPA (Gates) lower radiator hose for my 69 small block Z-28, it has no spring in the hose. Did factory hoses have a spring? I've always thought it helped prevent collapsing from suction.

General Discussion / 302 with crossram dyno numbers
December 31, 2018, 07:05:05 PM
Rebuilt my 69 Z engine this past year. Been in the car for 35 years and I decided to go through it. Only variations from stock specs are .040 overbore, 3927140 off road camshaft, stiffer valve springs, 69 GM crossram, and 1 5/8"primary 3" collector equal length headers. Best numbers were 370 lbs. torque @5700 and 417 H.P. @ 6700.

I have a set of motor mount frame brackets that I bought from GM years ago. One has part #3980941 stamped in it and it measures 1 7/8" to the center line of the mount bolt when laid flat on the bench. The other one is not stamped clearly so I can not read the part # it measures 1 3/8" to the bolt center when flat on the bench. I bought these as a pair and was wondering if anyone could verify these measurements.
