Restoration / Z28 Spolier Markings
September 07, 2024, 10:15:13 AM
Hi,  in the process of stripping the paint off my rear Spoiler I found some markings.  When I lightly sanded off the paint from a 1977 repaint I noticed the markings.  It appears to be a Squiggly line and underneath is maybe " D,O,5 or S, ?, ? then 9N " you can make out the 9N in the pictures.

I tried to look through the forum for some other examples of these markings and how they were used on the assembly line but i did not see any Spoiler examples.  Just curious

Restoration / How to strip 1969 Camaro Rear Spolier
August 22, 2024, 03:22:26 PM
Hi all,  I need to strip the paint of my rear spoiler.  My understanding is that it is made of SMC Fiberglass (Sheet Molded Compound). What is the best way to remove the paint?

Thanks,  Jon

Restoration / Sub Frame Measurements
July 23, 2024, 11:02:57 AM
Hi All,  My subframe appears to be bent?? With the subframe attached my car would lean to the passenger side. From Ground to fender lip the Drivers side is a 3/4 higher.  I ended up replacing the rear suspension first.  Did not help.  Checked tire pressure in all tires multiple times, no help.  Took the Sub frame back off and replaced all the frame mount bushings/hardware with new ones,  no help. Replaced all the upper and lower a- arms and springs/ shocks,  No help.

So i took the subframe back off the car today and did some measuring.  With the Subframe rear mount locations on cribbing and the wheels and tires on the ground the front of the subframe where the radiator would mount is level.

Where the subframe mounts to the firewall,  the mount pads are level.

The rear mounts on the subframe, when I placed a level across are 3/4 inch higher on the drivers side.

When attached to the body it cause the drivers side to be  3/4 inch higher than the passenger side.

1. My question is should the passenger side subframe rail be 3/4 higher or should the drivers side subframe rail be 3/4 lower.

2.  How should i go about fixing this issue?  I don't want to mess up the rest of the subframe because it is level.

Body shop was a no go.

Thanks,  Jon

Restoration / Short Steering Arm Markings
July 18, 2024, 11:38:37 AM
Hi all,  I have some steering arms that I assumed were original from my 1969 Z28.  However i cannot read the part numbers that are left on either arm.  One is stamped HR? and TK?  Was there other GM cars that came with factory short steering arms?  I could not find a conversation about the marks on my arms.  Are these aftermarket?  I did see some repo's from CPP thought maybe these were repos.  I did media blast them this morning.  See picture.  Thanks

Restoration / Firewall Paint color for PPG Deltron
July 12, 2024, 04:10:26 PM
Does anyone have a paint code or mix ratio for 1969 Camaro firewall black color.  We have tried 50/50 flat/gloss.  Today I tried more flat 70/30.  Still really shinny.  Did a spray out of flat black and it was really flat.  Any help would be great.  Needs to be in PPG Deltron product line.  Thanks ,  Jon

Restoration / Hood Latch to Hood to Header
June 22, 2024, 10:26:37 AM
Since my last post I was able to purchase the correct hood springs and new aftermarket hinges.  I now am trying to set the panel gaps.  When the panel gaps are good and square the hood is not even close to the latch? Original GM fenders, Gm cowl vent ,  GM Valance ,  Gm header , aftermarket cowl hood,  aftermarket core support i think.  Original Gm hood latch and bracket.  See picture. The hood is as far forward as it can go. In the picture it is pretty much level with the Fenders.  So if it could go down it would be way below the fender line.  The Core support is mounted in the first set of frame holes closet to the front of the car. Core support bushings are new.  Tried two sets.  GM original in great shape and Energy suspension bushings.  If anyone can post a picture of the latch to header panel / core support maybe that would help??  Possibly my latch is not my original?  Thoughts??

Restoration / 1969 Cowl Hood Spring
June 13, 2024, 02:05:14 PM
Hello,  I read through the CRG Under hood Components for the correct Cowl Hood Spring.  The chart says 8 3/4  , 26 coils.  Part number.  GM - 3877203.  Spring fits standard and cowl hoods.  I have ordered a couple sets.  The first set was OER.  The spring measures 7 1/2. and 26 coils.  The next set i ordered measured 8  3/8 and 23 coils.  Non of the measurements were available until i received the springs.  Of course they are all incorrect.  The next company told me that only the Standard hood received the 8 3/4 spring.  They even list it on there description.  (  1967 - 1969 Camaro Hood Hinge Spring, Standard, Each, 409025

High quality correct spring rate for use with the flat steel hoods. Sold individually, 2 required per vehicle. This fits all 67, 68 and 69 Camaros, but will various GM models with standard hoods. (Not for SS or cowl induction hood) Replaces GM part number 3877203.)

So is the correct hood spring "GM - 3877203" for Standard and Cowl?  Better yet is 26 coils and 8 - 3/4 correct.

I figured these springs would be easy to find.

Restoration / Dash Panel Replacement now the Vin??
March 25, 2024, 06:48:46 PM
Guys I decided to replace my Dash panel because it was to far gone.  Now what do i do about the Vin tag?  Is there proper rivets? I read through a bunch of forums and different people were saying the rivets were only available from State Police? Do I need to call State Police and have them verify the Vin plate goes with my car and then they will hand me the rivets?? That does not sound correct.  Others said only body shops have the correct rivets.  I looked at the usual parts companies and they only had trim tag rivets.  I left the Orginal Vin plate attached to the old dash panel. I could graft it all in to the old panel?   Thoughts??

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1969 seatbelts
March 07, 2024, 04:47:27 PM
I don't want to get of topic for this post but would the seat belt build date always start with the first week of January as "1" , etc.?  Then move forward to say the 43 week?  I thought my seat belts were all original but they code to several weeks after my 05A build?  Seatbelts are all 23 A 69 or 24 A 69.  Thanks,  Jon

General Discussion / 1969 Z-28 Leaf Spring Help
February 01, 2024, 05:04:00 PM
ok guys, I am in the process of disassembling my rear suspension I have found that the leaf springs need to be rebuilt.  However the passenger side leaf pack sits a little lower than the drivers side.  About  1/4 inch.  If I set the leaf springs side by side with the arch up in the air you can see the difference.  Not sure it is worth having the springs rebuilt?  I have looked at buying new and contacted bunch of vendors and they all list 4 leaf spring for z-28 with a 126 lbs spring rate.  I did see that Eaton Detroit Spring offers a 103 lbs rated spring.  They did not seem to get very good reviews.  I looked up an old post on CRG were John Z chimed in and said that 103 lbs was correct and the lighter rating helped correct Over steer in corners.  Has anyone had any experience with Eaton Detroit Spring?  Is rebuilding spring packs worth it?  I assume a spring would need to be replaced if it is worn out.  I have no cracked springs and they are not all rusted up. I do plan on taking the car to track days on a road course.  Any engineers in the forum, are 126lbs and 103lbs miles apart in the engineering world?  I am not racing the car just having fun at track days.   Thanks,  Jon

General Discussion / Tachometer Z-28 Required
August 14, 2023, 11:46:10 AM
Hi, I was reading through some of the CRG information on Z-28 required Tachometer.  Also an older thread.  The May/June time frame in 1969 that is referenced for a Z-28 to have a Tachometer. When would the dealers have been notified? I am not sure how long it took from Dealer order to delivery? Supposing I walked into the dealership on April 1st of 1969 would they have told me you must order a Tachometer because the build time for your car will be in May or June?  Or was it as of May / June at the dealer all cars ordered will require a Tachometer.  I read somewhere there was part shortages, labor issues etc.  My Z-28 was a 05A built car.  Not sure if it originally came with a tach? Wiring and dash carrier may be from another car.  Thanks , Jon

General Discussion / Register my Vin Number
July 06, 2023, 08:06:41 PM
Hi, I was not sure what area to post my Vin number.  I wanted to put it in the registry. You may already have information on it that I don't have. Vin Number 124379N640475.  1969 Camaro x77  05A build Date 71-71.  Original Shipping invoice to Porter Chevrolet, North Cambridge, Massachusetts. Had a friend do a back ground check through Law enforcement contact.  All they had was the car was first registered in Alabama in Late 1969.  We assume it was a dealer swap from Massachusetts? The contact could not find any other information other than titled in Missouri in 2017. Has drag racing decals from 1978 South Central Region NHRA. Pretty cool.
Trying to search some of the southern states for registration or Title information, etc. No luck yet.  Thanks, Jon

Hello, this is my first time on a message forum.  I tried to search for my topic but i did not see anything, so I thought you all might be able to help me.  I have a 1969 Camaro Z-28 X77 built 05A , 71 71 pnt.  The car was painted a dark blue but I found the original 71 paint underneath.  My deck lid and spoiler has the original paint color underneath the current paint.  However i can not find any white stripping underneath the decklid paint, spoiler paint or the vent cowl. Is it possible that a May built 1969 Z 28 could have been ordered without stripes? From what I have read the spoiler and stripes was required on all Z-28 cars built after April of 1969?  Thank You
