In case anyone is still interested in this topic, I have Firebirds (68 convertible 6 cyl Sprint w 3 speed and 400 HO with 4 speed Muncie) and both have the drive shaft offset just like the Camaro. I have looked for years to find out why but haven't ever gotten a good reason (just lots of guesses).
