I finally sent for a SDR on my 68 Camaro. The NCRS indicates dealer code 319 zone 48. Mohawk Chevrolet,Schenectady NY. This dealership has been out of business for something like 40 years. I used to live in that general area 30+ years ago. I purchased my camaro second hand in Schenectady in the late 70's. I had a feeling it would be that dealer. Mohawk Chevrolet was closed down,but the owner also had a Honda dealership which is still in operation. Strangely enough, Mohawk Honda recently(NOV,19) purchased Northstar Chevrolet Clifton park and renamed it to Mohawk Chevrolet. Hopefully this new info will help avoid confusion in the future if someone else has a Car from the original Mohawk Chevrolet -Schenectady.

If you plan to run a MSD checkout p/n MSD Programmable Digital 6AL-2 Ignition Boxes 6530. More to chose from, but appears a nice street/strip unit. Very popular with the bracket racers around here--can take some timing out at shift points ,launch etc.  based on track conditions. Very user friendly with laptop. One of my buddies chases points ,and installed the next unit up last season. Loves it. He has a 900+ HP BB which puts his Camaro in the high 8's ( and on the rear bumper once) His daughter runs the car around a mid 9 dial. If I was going a different path with my Z , A MSD set up would be my ignition system of choice for it.  Proven in our Gasser. Probably more a TC response, but thought I'd add.

What is the deal with the Vacuum can in the L88 pic. ?  There is no port.

L-88 AND ZL-1 did not use vacuum advance, only mechanical, as they were intended to be strickly race cars. So the stock vacuum can is factory sealed. These motors run much better with an adjustable vacuum can and manifold vacuum advance, as these motors love LOTS of advance due to the high piston dome.

So would you recommend a Vac Distributor for "Hot" street use? I was going to go with a Small cap MSD with mech advance.Even thought the L88 doesnt have much vacuum, I think I can get things to work ok by tying the systems into the RS Vac tank.

Old Chevrolet engineering dyno test show 575@6800rpm for the ZL-1. Mine was right on that figure.

The ZL1 didnt come to mind at the time,but I dont think I've ever seen a good pic of one either.I have an L88 for my 68 Camaro.
I did come across a Ebay seller that can make the decal,so I may go that route.

I dont know, It ONLY has 430hp @5200......and its old Horsepower also.

From everything that has ever been written about L88/ZL1's, the horsepower is well above 430.. especially with headers to let it breathe.   Chevy rated the L88/ZL1 engine at 430 (5 hp below the Tri-power solid lifter version of the 427) .. I suspect to discourage orders of the engines by the 'typical buyer'...  Only the most informed racers knew of these engines at the time...        ...with headers and supertune, I doubt that 500-550 hp is out of line..

I have done a bit of research the last couple years on the L88/ZL1 also.Theres not alot of info out there on these.From what I have come up with and having seen a couple dyno charts on them,they are quite impressive.GM as you stated wanted to discourage sales to the inexperienced and also due to the scutiny from the insurance companys they kept the HP rating lower.GM could not mis-state it for obvious reasons.Whereas the 427/425 and 427/435 engines were peak hp ratings they used Approx 1000 rpms below peak rating on the L88/ZL1.(430HP@5200) The dyno chart I seen on the L88 (1967/1968) with headers and good tune produced approx 557hp@6400.The ZL1 produced 585hp. As you may be aware in 69 the L88/ZL1 had a redesigned head/pistons with open chambers, venturi ports which breath better and a change to the camshaft which would account for the increase although the factory rating was not changed.
IMO the second design L88/ZL1 was pinnicle of success for Chevy.By todays standards maybe not so much,but going back to the late sixtys and to see how these were beefed up.7/16 pushrods,7/16 rod bolts using Boron steel with ground shanks,etc.According to my old info the L88 with a valve spring change (which I have done)the Redline is 7600 for drag racing and 7200 for Circle track(like Daytona).I paid $4500 for my L88 engine in 1982.
I think it quite fitting that it be nestled into my 68 RS/SS  
My Camaro will be stock looking on the outside.I dont expect the project to come to fruitation for 1-2 years.After this project is complete,I may build a 496 bb engine as a spare.

Tried all the places I could think of including Ebay and no luck yet.Must be a rarity.

I am looking for a Air cleaner decal "Turbojet 430HP".Anyone know where I can find one? Repo is fine.

Not sure I understand the date codes.Can someone refresh my memory? Also,Is there a chart that I can look up the part numbers for application?
I have a few "cores" I want to get rid of.

For smaller steel parts and some aluminuim ,glass bead media works well without removing base material.However it gets into every nook and cranny.Never add water as it really sticks then.Machine shops and some body shops may have glass bead cabinets.
Large parts can be sandblasted using fine grit sand,ground slag(black beauty).On thinner parts one has to be carefull that nozzle isnt too close or too great a air pressure used as it will peen and warp sheetmetal.

I only remember them Vaguely.I lived a little north of there in Ballston spa in those days.
Perhaps I should see where my 68 Camaro came from as I purchased it second hand from a residence on Crane st in Schenectady.

  Lord.................Thrush mufflers! That takes me back to 1975 and a green kid. I bought round Thrush header mufflers and was so dumb I thought they couldn't sell them if they were illegal. After enough tickets I got the message and bought some Hush Thrush header muffflers. Quieter but still too loud for the most crazed of constabulary hotrod cops. More tickets. I found that it wasn't the noise per se........cops just hate hotrods. Back then they were targeted and profiled and persecuted. It was a great revenue racket for the government.

Where did you get the system? Was system made for headers or did you have to cut them down?
