Can't begin to tell you the hours that went into putting the TOC together. Chick deserves all the credit for kicking this project off. We spent more than a few hours on the telephone and exchanging text messages to get it right. Great document which will hopefully act as a good reference source for our hobby and colleagues.

I remember that Chick went back and forth on what the correct finish for the nut should be during his restoration.  Here is a link to his build thread. I know the info is buried in this thread but I don't recall what he wound up doing. I think at the end of the day the nut was phosphated.

It's interesting copper plated and non-plated were used. I wonder if there was a reason both types were used and what determined it, if anything.

I'm just guessing that it may have to do with ensuring a good ground path from the coupler to the steering column.

Chick,

I noticed that both of your nuts are zinc plated and both lock washers are phosphate. If I remember correctly the AIM calls out different nuts and lockwashers. i.e. one side of the coupler, the one that is copper plated, used a zinc plated nut and lockwasher and the other side, used a nut and lockwasher that was phosphated. Maybe a Z/28 used a different combination of nuts and lockwashers???

Here are a few pictures of the original refurbished Steering Coupler from my '68. My car was built two weeks after Chick's so it is in line with what has been seen on cars of that time frame. i.e. Copper plated bolt.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

I checked my originals and there's no sign of any lettering.

I purchased the replacement bumpers a few years ago from Classic Industries (https://www.classicindustries.com/product/3792828.html). When I go to check up on my car in the shop next week I'll have a look to see if they have any lettering on them.

I don't recall where I got my replacements from but I'll have a look (currently out of town but will be home tomorrow). My car is in body shop jail but I plan on going to the shop next week. I'll have a look for you at the actual part.

I'll also dig out my originals to see if they have any lettering.

I'm fairly confident that all of the intake manifold bolts are 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" including the bolts that secure the lift bracket. I'm also fairly confident that the two bolts that secure the lift bracket are not shouldered versus all of the other intake bolts which are shouldered. From previous threads on this subject I thought perhaps that the two bolts that secure the left bracket were slightly longer (3/8-16 x 1 3/8") to compensate for the material thickness of the bracket. In fact, I even purchased a set of bolts (https://www.paragoncorvette.com/p-355394-intake-manifold-attaching-bolt-kit.aspx) from Paragon Corvette which supposedly had two longer non-shouldered bolts. When the bolts arrived, all of the bolts were the same length! A quick chat with Paragon indeed confirmed that all of the bolts were the same length and that their website is wrong! I've also come to learn that 3/8-16 x 1 3/8" is an extremely unusual grade 5 bolt size. I've yet to find anyone that sells this bolt in that size.

So at the end of the day I've decided to use the non-shouldered 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" bolt that came with the Paragon kit. It would, for sure, be interesting to see what the length of the bolt is on your '67. My guess is that it'll be the 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" length bolt.

I believe you are correct. From my research and at least on NOR built cars, lift brackets weren't installed until the '68 model year. Not sure about the LOS built cars.

I found a thread by JohnZ which showed a harness type system used prior to '68 to install the engines. The harness type system was abandoned beginning in '68 and lift brackets were installed to speed up the assembly process. Still not sure though if the lift brackets were installed at the engine assembly plant or by GM as the car was rolling down the assembly line.

Thanks Chick. I think I have it all sorted out and will explain to you when I'm down your way in a week or two (or the next time I see you).

  While looking at the clip I was reminded the valve cover gaskets are silver when I had looked at them. So, don't forget the silver coated valve cover gaskets!

Thanks very much Jim. The oil line clip was another one of those "need to figure out" items so the timing was perfect. BTW...that funky clip on the tranny took me forever to find. Not being reproduced and extremely difficult to find.
