General Discussion / Re: redlines

Try this one - hopefully the resolution is good enough to see the tires. Looks like a 3/8" single stripe, which I prefer over the wider or double stripes. I plan on adding these to my Nova if I can find one in a 6.95-14. Standard rim width is 5.5" -

Originality / Re: 1969 mag wheel covers N96

There are at least 2 part numbers for these, 551851 and 552205. Numbers are cast right on the backside of the centers. The 551851's are definitely silver spokes (these were optional on my '67 Nova, I have a good set with the car), the 552205's are darker. As 14" covers, these were available on a bunch of models, even other internal GM brands and outside of GM as well. Seem to be plentiful on eBay -

Anyone run across the above combination in the last 50 years or so ? Car was purportedly sold new from Washburn Chevrolet in Santa Clara CA; I may have happened upon the original owner of the car. It's an unusual enough combination to be picked out of a crowd for sure -

Owner is unsure if any documentation or photos remain in his possession on the car, he's looking. Considering how '68's need all the help possible with proving originality, I thought I might bait the hook a bit.

I assume it is likely an LOS build, always an outside chance of an "imported" Norwood car. Non-RS car, black standard interior reportedly.

Nope. Trust me, it's correct, but my phone likes to play with file crunching.

When I downsized the pic, it looked like a '67 tag. I'll try again -

I wish I had more than one, I'd be glad to send it for a moderate price, but considering the time it took to locate this one for my L48 A/C Z11, I'm definitely keeping this one close by. I thought I might drop the pic to show you the tank codes and layout.

Importantly, if you do find one, don't bead blast it or it will promptly disappear before your eyes. Evaporust is good, electrolysis is better (as it replaces the iron oxide rather than remove it). I did both, electrolysis followed by passivation with Evaporust, saved it from a really poor condition to a usable part.

Good luck in your search - hopefully the people reproducing tags will give us a good one one day. They are truly scarce -

Restamped, no doubt. Too many flaws and missed details.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1968 MO 302 stamp — Legit?

General characters and font are not outside the realm of possibility. Judge the build date against the casting date and the assembly week and see how it falls. Assuming the casting number is correct as well ? If everything matches, I wouldn't count it out -

Originality / Re: wiper blades for '69 Z28
August 28, 2024, 11:22:44 PM
My X77 had Anco Red Dot Anti Wind Lifts on it when I bought it in 1973, my Z11 had them on it when I bought it in '94, the '68 Z had them on it when bought in '94. The X77's wipers had been on there for at least a few years prior, judging by the patina, ditto on the other 2. Matte finish, all three. My '67 had them on it, only in bright finish. I've voiced my opinions on this before, participated in several threads on the subject, and asked the opinion of a guy that knows a whole bunch more about Chevrolets than I will in my lifetime. His opinion matched what I always thought about originality. I've heard a lot of comments on both sides of the fence - my ultimate decision is to leave them on the car(s) as they are. Plus, you can find both Trico and Anco references in the parts books. I like the cosmetics -

Unfortunately, I couldn't make it a clean sweep as the X66 only had one wiper arm on it with no blade. A pretty high percentage of coincidence, you have to admit -

Originality / Re: 68z valve covers (The O)
August 28, 2024, 09:38:51 PM
Had mine rechromed years ago, fortunately the plater heeded my warning about removing the "0", but it's still a little lighter than the finish with the OE chrome over nickel.

I do think it's peculiar to the HP engines, my '67 script Chevy ll L79 covers are supposed to carry the "0" as well. I assume the '67 Z (same covers) would be the same -

General Discussion / Re: Engine stamp

Ditto. There are a couple of tells on this one - the partial VIN looks decent, but the build date/code stamp is definitely bogus.

It's not just the O rings you have to worry about - the spag oil used with R134 will eventually erode the R12 hoses as well as the O rings (new compatible rings are Viton if I remember correctly). Also, R133 systems do not use the POA valve (at least in R12 form), most air conversions recommend gutting the old valve and keeping the shell for original cosmetics.

I guess at some point (when I run out of R12 access), I'll have to convert my Z11 to R134. Last pricing I saw for a 30lb can was more than I paid for my X77 in '73 - no exaggeration.

Totally depends on how you're going to configure the system - the compressor will run with either depending on which you are setting up for, just make sure the compressor is internally clean(with no residual oils from the opposite Freon from you are converting). Same goes for the rest of the components. A good friend of mine converted his A6 compressor on his '69 Firechicken 6-7 years ago to 134, has maybe 20K miles on it and works great.

How the system is going to do when 134 goes away is another good question -

Out of curiosity, did you get an answer ? Sending a PM might get you a response.

This the car (according to the VIN, yes) ? I noted the dealer indicated "proper DZ stamping". A pretty LeMans car nonetheless -

It used to be Armor All "Detailer's Advantage", spray bottle, my supply has lasted for years (so I haven't bought any in a long while). I've also used regular Armor All for the same purposes before. I was hesitant to use it on my top at first, installer recommended to apply to a soft cloth first and then lightly apply it to the top, I was satisfied with the result from the first use. Using it ever since -
