General Discussion / Re: Van Nuys Suppliers & Timelines
December 27, 2025, 11:11:47 PM
Quote from: william on December 18, 2025, 11:38:15 AMHaving spent a chunk of my working life in supply chain, here's my 2ยข.

Some suppliers of common parts are required to be within a certain distance from the plant. I recall John Z mentioning that fuel tanks for Van Nuys were produced there, as were jacks certainly other components. Drive train components were not, VN had to maintain a larger inventory to cover. For 02A VN Z/28s the engine date to final assembly gap is 10-18 days; at Norwood it's about a week. One or two days is not unusual.

Optional equipment was definitely a problem. Hard to predict and once locked into tooling capacity, nearly impossible to change. November 1968 Chevy stopped taking Z/28 orders as 302 engine production through the end of 1968 was spoken for.

This mention of the VN engine date gap helps answer somewhat for dates my engine has vs its build month and week; however not specifically on my car.
And these were Flint built.
My engine is Tonowanda.

Variations for this within you suggested timeline?

Any VN employees from then still with us who could elaborate?

Will try to stay on topic with this but another thought came to mind.

So, both plants have assembly lines.
How much prior scheduling did the 2 plants prepare for in relations to amount of vehicles built per day/week?
Then I'll add in special build orders and ,
for example :
fitting in the corporate requests for the PaceCar builds; or any others that apply?

I'm going to guess the other inclusions for these possibly modified supply deliveries?

I'm curious to ask what majority of parts and their manufacturers were anchored in the east to Midwest.

For example, my car uses the YJ rims.
Were all supplied by one manufacturer?

Curious as to how GM determines how they selected distribution.

I suppose that my engine arrived from Tonawanda via rail?

I'm curious as to painting a picture as to how my car was built.

Fascinating to me on how all this came together.

General Discussion / Van Nuys Suppliers & Timelines
December 14, 2025, 02:00:58 PM
Subject:
Van Nuys suppliers and timelines for parts delivery.

Curiosity has finally hit me after a long thought about how Van Nuys received GM parts from its suppliers.

I briefly asked Kurt about the subject and suggests there were many suppliers to GM.

I'll start, for example, as I have a 1969 VN Camaro.

Could multiple suppliers provide the same parts installed from different regions.

I thought about the driveline parts.
I read an article stating that train cars carried parts from distances.

I suppose we could break it all down to year by year & model to model; but for now, the beginning of my discussion lies on 67-69 Camaros.

So we see both plants :
Van Nuys & Norwood plants.
Just to single out just my car for the moment, I'm finishing up some dates and timelines of parts installed.

What has crossed my mind is, is there any chance that delays of parts arriving could dictate a wider variance of installed dates versus Norwood built cars?

My desire is to ask for contributions of known issues and thoughts to present here in order to help define more of what happened during each years' assembly runs.

Thx

Thx Kurt.

Based on GM data. Some options get broken down, but some times they don't.
L34 - sorry, got tired of crunching the numbers.

How well do these number reflect to the data you have accumulated to date?

So many 69 cars that one might assume the data presented would be higher.

Here is the VIN of the protect-o-plate I have in my possession :
124379N547204

It is the pamphlet card with the plate attached and the original purchaser's name and address present.
Dealer sale was OHIO.

(Quadrajet Date Code) : 0429 (February 11) manufacture (assembly) date for an 04C vehicle (3rd week of April)...

Informative read!!!
Was looking for something like this.

Kurt and/or Mark ,
Was searching for a thread discussing how the date codes should be understood.
Julian dating for a Quadrajet, the numerical sequence :
Is the date starting on January 1'st, of each year for Quadrajet builds?
In looking at a date, did GM count every day of the week in towards their numerical stamping on each Quadrajet body?
What I was thinking is that every Saturday & Sunday counted in the numerical order when being designated with a build date.
Is this a valid statement?

So, let's say, a 7029202 as above, the 0429 date...
Should we all count Every Saturday & Sunday towards the numerical order increasing in order to determine the actual day of the build of a  Quadrajet ?

One pic shows the 13 date and the other, if you look close enough, the top of the font of the numerical 1 is present.

Cleaning these up properly, at times we can see the toolong that the letters and numbers were struck with.

The Y and J show that circle around the letters

OK, so I found another 14x7 YJ rim.
Stamping is 14X7 JJ   10 B
The rim is a K-1-9  10-13 dated rim.
Now we have A & B  present on the bands.
So, I am continue to look into these; dates or letters exist!

Here is the letter B stamping with the 10 for the month

sometimes as i continue to look at these, the 10-8 code : that 8 sometimes, to me, appears like a letter B

Thoughts?

another from the 68/69 set...

On this rim shown, the center is K-1-8 and the band is K-1-9

All dated first week 1969 at the valve stem.

Ill have to check if all have the 14X7 JJ with the A stamp and no month/day codes

I have a set that are last week 1968 and 1st week 1969 dated.

Some have K-1-8 and some have K-1-9; days apart.
