Get good, cleat pictures of the casting number, casting date, engine pad stamp, and the partial VIN stamp on the block and post them here. Once the local experts have verified the stampings are legitimate, there is an orpahns page here on CRG where you can post all the information. Byron is exactly right. Norwood didn't start putting the X codes on the trim tag until well after September of '68.

Welcome to the club! If you look just to the right of the YouTube icon in the message toolbar, there is an icon labelled "Insert an Image".

Rear axle is stamped Jan 19 (0109), and tag is from a 4th week of September car, so those don't line up.

Seems strange to hide the body number if it is truly for "collector" purposes.

Honestly there isn't anything special about a VIN except to identify the car.

I agree. Maybe the first car will be held as something "special", but after that they are just another car.

I'm no expert on the authenticity of stamps, but it was common for GM to use the number 1 in place of an I for assembly stamps.

Stay after him (without being too much of a PITA). If he knows you own its car, that might help persuade him, too.  Frank has a good idea, too.

Good luck chasing the engine down. Sucks about your trim tag being missing, but a '68 TT won't prove anything one way or the other.
