I am looking for help determining the history of the #27 Camaro shown in the photos. I purchased the car from a friend that was an amateur racer in Nebraska, and determined the car was owned by David Phelan from Prineville OR, and raced by Russ Harness and Lew Florence at the Kent 300 race in October, 1967. It was painted metiallic green with "hippie style" AS lettering on the side for the Kent 300. It had a very unique tall fuel filler sticking out of the trunk. This car caused Jerry Titus to wreck in qualifying for the Kent 300. Does anyone have contact information for David Phelan?
The car was Marina Blue w/White stripes non-Z28 when purchased new from Bellwood Chevrolet in Bell, CA. The production date was March of 1967. It may have been raced as Marina Blue/White earlier in '67. Bell, CA is very close to the location of Dick Gulstrand's shop, and many of the parts on the car lead me to believe there may be a connection. It also had a Traco motor.
The car was later sold to Thomas A Bruce in Aspen, CO. My friend Leonard Janke purchased the car from Tom Bruce in 1971. I have pictures of the car from 1971 that show it painted yellow with #56.
The car has been stored for about 50 years,and is currently blue. I have many of the original racing parts from the car. The car was updated with a lot of good parts in 1968, which leads me to believe it was being raced in Trans-am in 1968. I have sanded parts of the body to reveal the previous colors.
Any info on this car would be appreciated.
How do I know this is my car? Check out the 3rd photo of the rear deck lid. The car has been repainted blue, but I removed the rear spoiler and the original livery is still there! You can see the "hippie" style AS and the bottom of the numbers.
