I have searched the CRG website but could find no info on steering boxes and what the numbers on them mean. I have a 1969 Z/28 RS with factory power steering. I am trying to determine if the steering box is the original one or not. The numbers I could find on it are as follows: 56865 then either a 3 or a 5 followed by a 5, 913 4, and 339 8. Any help with what any of these numbers mean or designate would be appreciated. Thank you.
according to my interchange book without power steering, the Z box is part number 7806396 for all three years. Also for optional quick ratio. It says the number is stamped on the top or bottom cover.

Mr. Pozzi has a ton of technical information on his site. Very cool! He mentions having '67 and '69 units that both have a cast number of 5691676... I kind of remember reading that this cast number was used for a long time? You could also do a search at Team Camaro (or on here?) to see what comes up. It's been discussed (usually about ratios and upgrades) many times on that site...
STAMPED INTO THE ALUMINUM COVER IS A DATE CODE. sounds like the 339 8. that would be the 339th day of 68. what is the production date of your car? i will try to get to my car today and get back to you.
Thanks guys for your help. My car's production date is 01C, so it seems a steering box assembled in Dec., 1968 would be alright for a third week in Jan., 1969 car.
Vince,
I am apt to believe the box is the original. I have the same part # 5686555 with a 913-3 and a date code of 155 9 - I know this is the original box with the N44 option
That's good enough evidence for me to determine that my box is the original one. Thanks.

Thanks Kurt for the link.
