Title: Oil Level
Post by: Don.Banas on March 01, 2010, 04:44:48 PM
I drained the oil, replaced the filter and added 5 quarts of oil.  The oil level reads about 1+" above the full mark on the dipstick.

Can someone tell me the proper lenght of the dipstick tube and the proper lenght of the actual dipstick.

I have a NOM 302 in a '69 Z28

Here are a couple of photos of an original '69 302 dipstick. From the bottom of the metal seal cup, it's 18-7/8" to the tip, 17-5/8" to the "add" mark, and 16-3/4" to the "full" mark.

Did you fill the oil filter from one of those 5 qts of oil, or run the car to fill the filter before checking the level?

JohnZ - thanks for the measurements - I'm leaving on vacation today but will check when I return.

Mark - yes I measured the oil after running it.  I only put 5 quarts total in the engine.

Your oil filter might be smaller.  If its smaller than usual then you will go over the fill mark.

OK - I finally got around to measuring the dip stick and the one I have is longer than it should be.

Now the question is - where can I get the proper one?  Is there a part number or other identifying mark(s)?

Thanks
