I've been looking for a 3917610 Intake Manifold for some time now and some that I've seen have a portion of the middle section(below carburator area) cut out. Any reason for this? Racers trick? Better fuel distribution?

Yup, common modification for racing. The factory L-88/ZL-1 intake is mostly just a 163 with the plenum divider cut out.
there have been many 610s on ebay for sale some in very good shape.
If you need one that's perfect, restored and all the correct fittings, we just finished one at CHP, call me if you're interested.
