Title: do back stripes change on 69z28 with vinyl top???
Post by: hotz on December 14, 2009, 03:28:18 PM
Hello
I am ready to paint my 69 z28 but, I have a noticed a few things that makes me question. I have a 69z that has a white vinyl top. My car is Lemans (71 code) car. I have noticed  and maybe this is just me but, on z 28 with out vinyl tops the strips on the back of the car go higher up ( or closer to the back window) than on the cars with vinyl tops. Is this just me being stupid or do the strips change depending upon vinyl or not??? I would think that the stripes would be the same but, looking at other cars I am thinking different.  ???I did not notice when we sanded my car down where the stripes started/stopped but, I the posts are still there where the chrome molding clips on the edge of the vinyl. Could anybody tell me the measurements of where the stripes are from the trunk lid up or from the chrome clips down? Thanks and look forward to hearing back.

What about the stencil kit from classic industries? Do you think it will work or that there is instructions inside the kit? Thanks a BUNCH!!

I would simply go by John's word in the link I posted above and read this also for stripe dimension data: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1293.msg8103;topicseen#msg8103

Stripes stop 5/8" from either the rear window chrome if you don't have a vinyl top, or 5/8" from the the chrome strip that went around the back edge of the vinyl top.  The stripes do stop at different relative locations on the body because the vinyl top ended further down the back panel of the car than the chrome strips on the window.  Relative to the front edge of the trunk, the vinyl top cars stripes end about 3 inches from the trunk lid while the non vinyl top stripes end about 6 inches from the trunklid. Use the 5/8" dimension from the top molding and you'll be fine.

i believe the stripe kits have notches on the sides to line up for a hard top or vinyl roof

Not being argumentative but one person's locating notches found the stripes almost 1" down from the moldings. Do as above for accuracy.

The kit I bought was crap. The curve did not match the moulding and it was crooked as well. Be careful and do your home work. See my attached picture for the wrong stripe using the instructions. I had to get it re-done.

These stripes are original - 5/8" from the window reveal molding, curvature at the top matches the molding.
