What is the normal range for a dated block vs. dated mincie? If your car is a 3E, block code 0320 what would the correct range of dates for a trans be? Second week in March?
The engine date doesn't enter into it - the transmission was installed at the car assembly plant. Transmissions are typically dated 2-4 weeks prior to the car's final assembly date.
Thanks John. The reason for my question is that I have been contacted by the person who sold me my original engine that my trans is now available. When I bought the block he said he knew who had the tramns but didn't want to sell. So I want to make sure everything is on the up and up with the dates.
As JohnZ said - "typically 2-4 weeks"
Powerglide in my '69RS is original to the car and has the partial VIN stamped on it. The date code stamped on the pan is C9A16N; i.e. built in Cleveland on Jan 16,1969 during the night shift.
As close as I can estimate it, my car went through final assembly at Norwood on or very close to Monday, 20 January 1969.....which means that the tranny was finished in Cleveland during the night shift on Thursday, 16 January 1969; was shipped to Norwood and installed in my car within a 4-5 calendar day time frame.
I have a documented LA Z/28 with the exact same date on the trans, rear axle, and front pad stamping.
Has anybody seen this before?

Yes. Not uncommon on base V8 auto cars, not real common on a Z.
My original Norwood Z28/RS... 09C (1969) date...
Engine V0827DZ 27Aug69 (cast on 26Aug69)
Trans P9H30A 30Aug69 (Muncie M20)
Diff BU0829G1 29Aug69
Alternator 9H25 25Aug69
4053 carb 982 midAug69
Distributor 9E16 16May69
Rallye Wheels K1 9 5 20 20 May 69
Fan H69 **
Fan Clutch H21J **
I'm not positive on how to decode the fan/cluch dates..
What other codes/dates should I be documenting on my car?
I'd like to try having it judged in the 'Original Unrestored' class next year. What is the best show to do so? What is involved in getting it registered? Should I remove the ceramic headers, Mallory Rev Pol dist, and Judson Electron magneto, and put back the original distributor, coil, and exhauist manifolds? (I don't have the smog system)..
i think the trans date is june 30 not august 30......H=June on the trans, anyhow, my fan is F69 and my build is 07A so H69 could be august as well as the fan clutch
There are many P9H30A, B or C transmissions. I have rebuilt many and the B/D range on the cars spans to August of 1969.

I looked at this car in person, about three years ago.I am the one who took the heads off the block and removed the intake for the very first time! Everything is original 100percent . Kurt knows about this car also. Yellow/yellow flat hood, rear end housing rusty, dent in right front fender, two brother in Walla Walla purchased it new. The reason the rear end was toast because the muffler rubbed a hole in the cover. call me or email I would like to talk to you about this car. John

Good catch. H is June for transmissions.
Hmmmmm.... that is interesting to me, and something I didn't know.. :) Why is H for June for transmissions?

Because that is how the transmission assembly plant coded them. Read this... http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#TransmissionNumbers

Thanks Paul... I just read it.. *G* .. but it still defies logic.. *L*
Those Transmission production people were worse on their alphabet than my 2 yr old grandon.. *L*. they totally lost their F and G....
it's also interesting to me that the CRG report says that the year is for the MODEL year, not the calender year, and yet they only provide Jan thru Dec codes (and skip F and G for some unfathomable reason)... soo taking all the CRG information as it stands, it seems that a Muncie transmission produced in August '68, and one in August '69 (both for 1969 model year production.. would have EXACTLY the same stamping... (which defies all logic associated with manufacturing processes)... so I think something is missing here....????
Nothing wrong with your logic. Yes, it was model year and, yes, I've seen trans with exactly the same dates, but a year apart. A 69 Camaro dating anonomaly.
Kurt... I think if you or I were working in that plant during that year, before June or July of 1969, we would have figured out a 'fix' for that problem... without duplicating the yr/month...?
What surprises me is that they stamped it P9R02A for a late 69 Camaro, but then the same day would stamp a P0R02A for a Chevelle.
That had to be some interesting internal memos about not changing the model year, but just for Camaro and Vette......
That reminds me of an old military term.... SNAFU.. . :)
