Title: 69 Leaf Spring Eye Bushings install
Post by: 69z28302 on August 10, 2008, 09:22:37 PM
I am going to install the front leaf spring eye bushings on my car and was wondering if the flange goes toward the outside or inside of the car? Also, should you bottom the flange out or just center the bushings in the spring? The ones I removed were not bottomed out on the spring. Any help on this will be appreciated.

Thanks CRG
Mike

What flange? I'd like to try and help, but I don't understand your question.

What I'm calling the flange is the flat steel part a one end of the bushing. I'll try to attach a picture.
Thanks
Mike

I've found them to be installed left to right (both sides), the flange on the LH side.  I think there is a pic in the AIM showing the same, but not sure if you can really count on that.

I don't think it really matters though, just center them in the leaf and you'll be fine.

I agree - I don't think it matters. The front eye bushing was installed by the spring supplier, and there was only one part number spring used on both sides (not RH and LH parts), so it wouldn't be unusual to have the flange facing outboard on one side and inboard on the other side.

Thanks Dave and John,  John do you agree that the bushings were centered on the spring?

Thanks

I just checked my untouched original springs, and the bushing flange is inboard on the passenger side and outboard on the driver's side (both done the same way), and on both of them there's about a 3/16" gap between the flange and the spring.

I'm sure that how the ones I took out were also. I just wanted to be sure. Thanks for checking that John Z

Since there was no spec to install them a certain way, and outer edge-to-edge measurement of the bushing won't be symmetrical in relation to the spring if pressed all the way to the flange, it would "logically" make sense for the bushing to be centered.

Of course that is just "in theory", as where the 3/16" won't make a whole lot of difference, but maybe slightly in a 4-wheel align.
