Title: How many 1969 Automatic Transmission COPO Camaros
Post by: no69x-44 on October 24, 2026, 12:18:13 PM
I think, for the most part, the accepted production number(s) for the iron block 1969 COPO Camaro (9561) is 1015 and for the aluminum block version (9560) is 69.
So my question is ... how many of the 1969 COPO Camaros where built with the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission? I know the overwhelming majority of them were built with four speeds. As an owner of one, I am curious as to how many of them came out of the factory as automatic transmission cars.
Thanks.

The 1,015 figure is the total number of Camaro L72 engines (822 MN, 193 MO) built for the 1969 model year. The number came from Tonawanda records via Fran Preve, an employee so the source is highly reliable.

COPO Camaro build records listed the L78 engine and COPO 9560 or 9561 but not Camaro SS. The total number of 1969 Camaro SS built with 396 engines was therefore incorrectly reported as 13,659. Adding 350 and reported 396 engine SS installations; 35,996. Total Camaro SS production was 34,932 1,066 fewer than engine installations.

That means 997 COPO 9561 L-72 Camaros were built. Estimating using the same percentage as engine production, 189 were automatic.
