Getting nostalgic after seeing a photo of a Camaro that externally looked identical to my old one (it has a black interior not Ivory), an AI assistant pointed me toward this forum to see if my car might have survived.
I special-ordered the car from Blair Chevrolet in Island Park, NY, and took delivery around July or August 1969 (it was delayed due to a GM strike).
Unfortunately, I no longer have the VIN, but it had an extremely distinct factory build sheet:
Model: 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS396
Engine: L35 396 cu. in. / 325 hp Big Block V8
Transmission: 4-Speed Manual (floor shift, no console)
Exterior: Tuxedo Black (Paint Code 10)
Interior: Ivory Vinyl (Trim 727)
Factory Options: Air Conditioning (RPO C60), Power Windows (RPO A31), AM/FM Radio (RPO U69)
Notable Deletes / Standard Specs: Manual Steering (No RPO N40), Standard Floor Shift without Center Console (No RPO D55)
Given the rare mix of heavy luxury options (A/C, Power Windows) paired with raw performance/manual setups (Manual Steering, No Console) on a Tuxedo Black 396, I'm hoping this unique trim tag combination rings a bell for anyone tracking surviving first-gen Camaros or Blair Chevrolet delivery logs.
If anyone has seen this car in a registry, database, or collection, I would love to know if it survived!
Welcome aboard. If you could find an old insurance card or something like that, that would help with the VIN. Also, since console & power steering were options, they weren't deleted...just never ordered....Joe
Yes, if you could find the VIN that would probably help.
There is a group on Facebook called Lost Muscle Cars. I think you have to do a subscription to have a post, but they have been able to track down quite a few cars.
Thanks for the reply. I have no records just great memories. Like a dumb kid I sold it in June of 1970. If I only knew LOL.
We have all gotten rid of cars we wish we hadn't. Lucky I kept my 68 since 1981 when I bought it, when I was 18.
So many times I heard , "Why don't you sell that car?"....."I never see you use that car, why don't you get rid of it?" I'm glad I didn't listen to any of them.
