Title: Automatic shifter button popped out...is there a simple fix?
Post by: HAMBO on March 15, 2026, 09:37:04 PM
Hi everyone,

My 1967 has the automatic floor shifter with the black plastic button in it used to allow it to shift gears. Unfortunately the other day the plastic button popped off...

Here it is with the button popped out:

Here is the plastic button, it has a small rod still screwed into it, and the rod looks like it has a tube / hole for a retaining pin of sorts. That tube looks empty now (I can see light through it), so I am guessing there was a pin in there that broke and so this popped out.

Anyone know whether there is a simple way to fix this?

The metal rod attached to the plastic button looks like it is the top piece of an actuator rod like this (image credit to Camaro Central):

When I put the black button and rod back into the hole on the shifter is still works, I can shift gears. But it just won't stay in place.

I am hoping there's a simple fix to replace whatever the retention pin would have been. Or do I need to install a new shifter or actuator rod at this point?

Appreciate any help!

Just take it apart and replace the actuator rod. Simple.
