Title: Frame Mounted Rear Brake Holdoff Valve Internals
Post by: boomer632 on February 03, 2026, 06:10:51 PM
So I was able to find a 108-9 dated Kelsey Hayes brake valve with the intent on rebuilding it for my car. This is the valve that mounts on the drivers side frame rail under the door. I was able to get it apart, and completely disassembled. In doing so, I had to destroy the c-clip to get it apart. So I ordered 2 repro valves, both made by OER. One came from Summit, the other from Classic Industries. My plan was to use the new internals for the rebuild of my KH unit. I also got 2 seal kits from Muscle Car Research. Upon getting one of the new OER valves on Friday, I took it apart to harvest its internals. I discovered that the valve only contained 3 parts, the spring, the aluminum tube and its corresponding seal. No outer seal, c-clip or metal washer. I then received the second valve today and it only had the same 3 parts inside. Has anyone taken one of these valves apart to use the internals to rebuild their assembly line valve? Im thinking that these OER units are basically useless as they dont have the parts that the KH units do. Here is a pic of what was inside the OER ones.

Thats how my original looked when I pulled it apart too. Unfortunaltely the c-clip was too far gone and the metal washer was pretty bad. Thats why I figured Id buy a repro one and use its c-clip and metal washer. I circled the missing parts in your photo that were missing from both new OER valves. I wonder where a new c-clip can be sourced? I asked Scott at MCR and he said the same.. get them from a new repro valve. Well it appears that the OER ones dont have the same internals. I think there is another brand that makes them. That one has INL stamped on the face of it. Maybe Inline Tube?

C-clips can be bought at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace hardware.....generally any good big-box location. They uually have them sorted by thickness and/or dimension. you could also try at McMaster-Carr....they carry just about anything you would ever need in the way of hardware. Any of these stores could probably help you with your need. They are also lot cheaper than any "parts house" supplier you may use. Good luck.

I bought an assortment of snap rings for about $7 from O'Reilly Auto Parts.

These are GM part #3908326. I dug out my box. I have 17 from '66, 7, 8 and 9 dates. They are wrapped in TP and in ziploc bags. I have some early '66 ones that I can't touch, as they are scarce to find in this nice condition.. BUT, maybe I can check for one with a later date in poor condition and then rob some parts off of it. I am pretty ill right now, I just woke up. But let me know if you want me to get them all out and see what we can find. They are all GM Original. I will check this message board later tonight.

The 1969 Dates I have are as follows.

 016-9, 027-9, 038-9, 050-9, 096-9

I have not checked any of them for condition. Some of these if I remember are nice, others are beat-up some. LMK if any of these dates work, then I can check that date. Or we can go back to my original plan of robbing factory parts.

Thank you Danny. With the washer and snap ring I get from you, Ill try to find matching ones from hardware stores. If I do find them, I will post up the sizes, and where to get if anyone needs them for rebuilding their assembly line hold off valve. My thought of gutting a repro for the snap ring and washer are stalled at the moment. I may buy one from in line tube to see what its intervals are. I returned the two OER ones to Summit as they dont have said washer and snap ring.

So I was able to find the snap rings. It is a 1/2" internal ring. The metal washer however not that lucky and will be a tough find.

I thought that might happen. That washer is an odd size overall. Nothing I have ever seen. Preparatory to these valves?
After you got the stuff I sent ya cleaned, are they usable. Is the baby washer usable?

^^ It is possible the "Washer" is a Narrow cross section Shim.
I would concur sourcing that will be a major obstacle.

Yes the washer was in good shape and installed. Thanks again for the pieces. So; for anyone rebuilding one of these.. the only part that is unavailable is the small metal washer. Finished products..

Funny I see the date 155-9. I HAD a 155-9 that I sold. You might have bought that from me?

If you know the dimensions, it would be a simple machining job.

The 155 came from a guy in OH. I now have 2 restored complete valves.
