Title: 1969 SS396 X66 with drum brakes ?
Post by: chgohr on October 28, 2019, 08:05:49 PM
Ok so I looked at a 69 SS396 X66 (real and original to the car cowl tag) today. The car has drum brakes and appears to not have had a power brake booster but there is no master/booster present now. If anyone ever asked me before today id have said impossible, has to be a fraud. However this car was wrecked and parked long ago (right rear quarter and wheel house damaged). The car still has it's "original" 12 bolt. Is it possible it ever came with front drums?

No. If it was drag raced, somebody might've removed the discs....Joe

X2. Same thing happened to mine, original owner swapped out the factory discs for drums, and removed the power booster.
Not proof positive, but if both the upper A-arms have 2 holes on the trailing (rear) vertical edge, then they were originally on a front disc brake car - used for the front flex hose retainer strap.

Ok so I think I have it figured out. After the car was wrecked ,many years ago, it was stripped. It did have a power brake booster at one time. Someone grabbed the front subframe and threw a "roller" under it. It was hit hard in the right wheel well so the differential must have been damaged or salvaged and a roller is under it now.

Please post the VIN. There may be more information available about that car?
