Title: Looking for information on a front coil spring 69 Z 12D X77 car
Post by: Emo1956 on December 23, 2018, 02:27:58 PM
I seemed to have looked everywhere and can't find the information on what the spring rate so I can replace the front springs on this restoration. It has a BBC in it right now but I am replacing with a original 302 motor. Heartbeat city has plenty of springs but I can find a chart on the springs. Any help with be much appreciated . Thank you Emo

Read THIS (http://www.camaros.org/suspen.shtml#MonoVsMultiSprings), then look at the CHART (http://www.camaros.org/images/pages/chassis/69_spring_chart.pdf).

I have only seen two different front coil spring numbers. I only can remember one number which I believe was used on most '69 Z/28s. The number is 3955720.

Interesting. I still have an EY tag from my Z/28-RS, part number is 3925814.

The chart Ed posted showed the EY spring as being pn 3955720

EY 3955720

When I pulled the springs out of my '69 Z28-RS it had the original EY springs (with tags) as well.  I could look and check the PN, but the '720' pn seems to ring my bell....?

For the OP...   the spring rate you need is a function of the equipment (and their weights) on your car.   You can consult the charts and add up the weights for your options to get the correct spring rate you need.

PS.  if you want to duplicate the rates and also the physical characteristics for the original factory springs, I suggest 'Coil Spring Specialties '      http://coilsprings.com/classic.aspx      Because one of my original EY springs was broken, I had them build duplicate springs, matching 'wire size/dia', number of coils, and spring rate ...

William, that is the other spring I was thinking of 3925814. That and 3955720 are the only two springs I have ever seen on a '69 Z/28. The 3925814 spring I have seen them only on RS, Z/28s.

When I replaced my springs, Heartbeat no longer carried Z specific springs and sent me a set of small block ones. They sat too high and did take them back. Several of us have used David Pozzis spring chart and I got my Moog springs at summit for around 80 bucks. Its not a fun job to have to do it twice

OK..   It took me awhile to search and find photos of the factory original tags from my EY springs.   My memory was faulty on the spring PN; William was correct; the GM chart with code/pn seems to be wrong?   The EY spring PN is 3925814.     A post containing a photo of my EY coil spring tag is here:

The part number and code depends on WHICH chart you look at!! GM Parts Manuals are riddled with inconsistent, inaccurate and even incorrect information.

The chart below is from the February 15th, 1969 P&A 34.

Have you tried Eaton spring? I know they did make most springs for the OEMs. That said, IF you know the correct part numbers and spring rates, I'm sure Eaton can order replacements for you.

As a clarification, many of the original springs were made by the "Eaton Corporation", which is still in business today. However, there is no connection between Eaton Corporation and Eaton Detroit Spring. They're two completely separate businesses. Eaton Corporation is a HUGE multi-national business, and Eaton Detroit Spring is a family-owned Detroit spring service shop with full manufacturing and metallurgical capability.

Thanks John Hinckley!

My 12D RS Z has it's original EY "814" springs in it.   I would assume with the OP's Z being a non RS it would have a different spring...?

In other cars I restore here I always use Coil Spring Specialties.  They have done a fantastic job getting the rates and stances correct on everything I've bought springs for.  A little more spendy than other places but I like the service and the detail in which they provide.

As an extreme example doing my fathers car, I threw a real curve ball at them, wanting a factory stance, but also a spring that would react and produce weight transfer similar to a moroso trick spring.  Then told them it has a fiberglass hood, a heavier aftermarket block with aluminum heads, hidden headlights, and a couple other variables thrown in.  They wanted all this information.   They nailed the factory stance perfectly.  Very happy with their services.

Correct. Sorry, I should have been more clear on my reply with the differences. Anyways, try Eaton Detroit Spring as suggested.
