SS396 would have to be an X66 or X22 tag.
I see "real deal" on car listings often enough now to think something is going to be fake. Sad deal these days. :P
Also is it me, or does 69 get fake tags, and re stamped motors way more than 67 or 68?
(or maybe it is just easier to pick those out?)

I think so. '68s, LA & early NOR '69s are usually overlooked. When I was involved with the Camaro business [1990?], we had a customer restoring a Forest Green '70 Z28. He wanted it red, so that was the first car I knew of with a repro body tag.
No Camaro is immune.
I know a 67 with a repro tag that was done in 85 or so. Made into a 396 car.....
