Title: 69 big block 1108418 starter
Post by: HawkX66 on March 14, 2016, 08:37:34 PM
Can you guys tell me about my starter. Does everything look right? Cast iron nose cone etc? I pulled it apart tonight and its missing a brush. I want to r&r it with new bushings, brushes and whatever else it might need.
If you see anything out of whack, don't be shy!

Wow, you can hear the crickets chirping. Bueller? Anyone in the know that can confirm the nose cone is at least correct?

Thanks.

Hi Dave,

  It's a full moon today! :o
I can only comment for a '67 1107365 BB starter. Mine has a 2 bolt hole nose and I see your starter has 3 holes. That's the only thing that caught my eye. If it is supposed to be 3 holes then, IMO, yours looks fine. If the winding's don't show signs of cracking or any obvious shorts then I would leave it alone and just change the brushes.
This last discussion shows my starter nose in reply #34: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=10637.msg82906#msg82906

 ;D

Thanks Mike. The number of bolt holes was the biggest thing that I was questioning and still am really. I've been reading everything anything I can find about it. I think three is correct for some, but not others. Not that it helps much... From what I saw they moved to three bolts because of cracking nose cones. I can't really confirm it though.
I also saw some guys talking about the cast code on the starter nose cones being date codes, but I don't think it is. Mine says 730 which by their rationale was the 73rd day of 1970, but I've seen pictures of too many 1st gens with similar numbers ending in zero.
It looks like the common number to identify these parts is 10MT. Does that sound right?

Probably not the right site for the Moonies type humor posted previously.  It was removed.

Thank you for the correction Bryon. I'll remember to leave the humor at the door..

Honestly it wasn't that bad, but I would not like to see any trends started. Slippery slopes are best avoided...

I've seen the question of how many bolt holes the 69 big block starter should have posted many times. I've yet to see a definitive answer. I'm not saying it's not out there, but I wasn't able to find it. There is a note in the AIM that answers the question without a doubt. I didn't see it before. "Rear Inboard Hole Not Used." So the answer to the Nose Cone Question is: It should have three holes for a 69 big block. UPC L35 Sheet A10
