Post by: 69Z28-RS on February 21, 2016, 04:46:18 PM
OK..  I finally found a big block app code listing... XM is a '68 396/275 hp truck motor with 2 bbl carb... I wonder where I can unload this??  :)

Craigslist? A 396 would be a short deck block, so it should be worth the same as a 396 out of a car.

The fella I got it from said it only had about 500 miles on it after being rebuilt by a local shop, and that it 'ran great' when pulled from a car before it was sold.  I was sorta enthused (if I can be enthused over a 'fat motor' :) )   but since I didn't know the codes for these motors, I had to check.  When I found out it was from a '68 truck, and was originally NOT a high performance block (although the block is stamped 'Hi Perf' on the side?? - what's with that?).. I sorta lost the interest I'd built up.   I was told that when it was rebuilt it had a hydraulic version of an 'L88' spec cam installed... probably meaning hi-lift??

Of course, I'm all about 'factory numbers', so a modified engine doesn't have much interest to me at this time (but it would have when I was in my 20's... :) )

Gary, you can "unload " this 396 in a truck bed heading to my place. I "foster" any unwanted big block. All 396s have HiPerf cast in the block and in more than 1 place.

Bentley,  I might have to do that...  :)   I'd love to see your barn full of '69 Camaros.. :)

PS.  having such a heavy weight on my front suspension has never had much interest when a high revving small block *sounds and runs* so good..   If I were to run a 'fat motor', I'd have to install aluminum heads to get the weight down.. :)

Save yourself the trip and leave it in Lebanon..  You'd be back home before dark..   8)

Or you can continue on to Bentleys to see the 9s as all that's around here are 7 & 8s..   >:(

I'd put you up for the night and feed you. G., with what you have in rolling stock, this place would be a HUGE disappointment. G. Google a midpoint between me and D.W. and drop this thing along the side of the road. I'd hate to have to wrastle for it, Cook is like a brother to me, but I will. :-\ :'( ??? ;D
