Need some input, after giving some thought...hell has frozen over. After 48 years come Spring, think I'm hanging the original exhaust back on it when come time. Concerning the pipes and muffler, any suggestions as far as coatings? Not going on it looking like this. Want to keep the aluminized appearance. Or will just cleaning them up, and out of the weather keep it looking new? System was literally a take off.

This will be an interesting discussion that I will be looking forward to hearing some thoughts. I have 160k on big block's pipes...Joe
I would guess some dips in Evaporust, then some aluminized exhaust paint is needed. I used the Seymour brand after I had to do some exhaust surgery :) Maybe some galvanized look paint on the muffler.

Have them blasted and ceramic coated.
I did similar to what KevinW suggests... and my pipes look similar to his. I ran sandpaper over the outside to remove the loose stuff, then sprayed with Dupont metalprep, then washed, dried, and painted with a silver color high temp exhaust paint.
My goal was/is to *preserve* the life of them as long as possible, and prevent further deterioration from the outside surfaces. The pipes I did this too were purchased from Chevy parts department in 1976, and they still looks pretty good.
My one area I'm going to have to *work* if I put the original exhaust manifolds back on is the header pipes, as I cut them to mate to headers back at that time. Any suggestions as to where to purchase the *most original* head exhaust pipes?
Don't know if Gardner breaks the systems down or not, try giving Bob a call at Camaro Specialties, see what he recommends.
Gary, maybe we could work something out. If I got Gardners system I wouldn't need the front (head pipe) section since I'm running headers. Haven't decided 100% yet, but I'll let you know
