Title: DZ Block ?
Post by: Camaro Billy on December 11, 2006, 06:08:36 PM
I was looking at a small block today w/ casting #3956618, casting date C 139.
It has been decked so no numbers on the pad.It has the 3941178 302 crank, I could tell by the crankshaft flange. The heads and intake are later pieces.
I found the VIN on the rough casting near the oil filter flange, but it was very hard to read.
The best I could tell was -
19N627_14
Couldn't read the 3rd to last number but for sure starts w/ 627.
Is that enough info to see if the car might be in the data base?
What else should I look at to try and confirm it's a DZ ?
Thanks
Billy

There was no block casting specific to the 302 engine.

The castings used by Chevrolet to build them were also used for 300 & 350 hp 350 engines. The block in question did come from a Camaro but with the code gone there is no way to tell if it was a 302. Since it has been messed with the crank may not be original.

Billy,

Is it at least a 4 bolt block? If so, then it's either 1 of 3 things:

1. 350/300 (SS)
2. 302/290 (Z28)
3. Redrilled for 4 bolt mains

Seems like I recall a discussion in the past dealing with acid etching to try and bring out the numbers after the block (and pad) had been decked.  I did a quick word seach and couldn't find anything.  It may be worth a little research.

Sorry I should of said it was a 4 bolt.
The owner had asked if I knew how to etch it. I think I can see a slight impression on the pad as it is.Those instructions are great. If we give it a try, I'll post back.
Thanks for the info.

A few VIN's in the db close to matching, but none do.

Looks like an 1178 crank flange to me.  :)

That VIN isn't in the db. One exactly 20 off from it is there, but close only counts in.....  :)
