Title: Sway bar bracket change
Post by: crobjones2 on September 24, 2014, 07:39:25 PM
While having difficulty trying to find replacement bushings for my sway bar, I often wondered when the change occurred. Any ideas? Would it make sense to create a research topic upon such? Having an 06A(2nd week) Norwood car, I can only assume the change to the larger, fingered, bracket happened before then.
What I have found soo far is that the bracket remained the same from 1967- some time in '69.  I can only surmise that the new bracket design may have been to accomidate the larger 13/16 sway bar for 1970.

My untouched 02D Norwood '69 (built 2/27) has the "fingers" sway bar bracket.

Found this old post doing a search because I'm having trouble finding the correct fitting bushing for a 11/16 sway bar with the finger style brackets. Gotten several sets of Moog from major auto parts stores and the camaro aftermarket suppliers but when I find a bushing that can be used for the finger bracket it's for a 13/16 sway bar....get a bushing to fit the 11/16 sway bar and it's  to small for the finger bracket? I'm guessing the over seas manufacturing is the problem? I talked with Moog tech guy and he said the manufacture put the bushings in the boxes and very likely they are boxed wrong?I'd bet they are made wrong too! Now the old style bracket vs the finger bracket time of change seems to be in Feb based on the info from John Z...I have a O2B Z/28 never touched with the older style brackets? Thanks in advance...

I ended up making my own, using the original as a template

I'm not seeing the picture that's posted Kurt but I'm aware of the 2 types of brackets used. It looks like I'm not the only one who's ran into a problem getting a set of rubber bushing that's close to the correct size for a finger style bracket for a 11/16 or standard sway bar.The Rare Parts bushing pictured above fits the 13/16 bar..I got a set of those for a Yenko I'm restoring but did have to grind some off the top of the rubber due to being too tall. The smaller bushing pictured above will fit a 11/16 bar but as you can see it too small for the bracket..The middle bushing is an original... The bushing for the earlier style bracket will have a ridge in the bottom to match the bracket and are easy to find..Thanks

Okay I see what you mean.  As far as the bracket goes, if it helps crobjones or John at all, my 12D Z has the smaller brackets without fingers.

x33- if you need new ones, you should look at the '68 bushings. The 69 will usually be for the "fingered" brackets for the 13/16 sway bar

The 68 bushings have the ridge at the bottom as pictured above so do 67s and some earlier built 69s that are to small for the finger style bracket...Plenty of the larger 13/16 bushings available that fit the finger style bracket but the tricky one to find is a finger style bracket bushing for a 11/16 sway bar.

Kurt
Do you know when the change happened from the smaller humped bushing mount to the fingered mount? Was there a safety reason for the design change or was it in prep for the 70 model year?
