I need help, I am trying to restore this convertible 6 cylinder car to a very high level (I know I know) It has the original 3 speed trans, when I bought car the original floor shifter was sloppy hard to get in gear, so I replaced it with Hurst after market, 23 years later I want everything original so I got out old shifter and bought another shifter like it on eBay just to get stabilizer rod and now I am trying to get the right linkage levers for M15 Saginaw trans that will work with my back up switch. does any body have a correct picture of these AIM only shows M13 trans........Paul
I have boxes of the Muncie shifter parts and I know some are for 3 speed but it had to ID the parts when they are all sitting in a box.
I have the trans levers for a 3 speeds because I had some 3 speed shifters
The lever for 1st and Rev is longer and has the small hole for the rev light rod
Are you sure the 3 speed Saginaw came with a stabilizer rod? The 1967 Chassis Service Manual has picture on page 7-7 and it does not have the rod but on page 7-15 it shows HD 3 speed BW and it has the rod. Also shows back up sw. on trans on page 12-19 fig. 30.
Bob
I am not sure maybe that's why the one I had did not have one, I just thought that it was missing. Thank you, I did not think of looking in service .......Paul
Paul,
Could you verify the main case casting # for me. I have it on file as 3859986 but it could be 3858986. Also have 3858992 as the side cover but it could be 3919365, your help would be appreciated.
Bob
Bob, main case casting # 3858986, with cast date of C 23 7, side cover looks like 3919385.
Paul,
Do you have the 2.85:1 or 2.54:1 first gear? Your side cover 3919385 (3919365 ?) is 2nd. design.
Thanks.
Bob
It may be 3919365 I am not sure if its 2.85:1 or 2.54:1, how can I tell?
If the trans. is out of the car and in 1st gear count the number of turns the input shaft makes for 1 revolution of the output shaft. Example 2 and 1/2 turns input shaft and 1 turn output shaft = 2.54:1. This is ball park but close enough.
Bob, Trans is hooked up to engine, however drive shaft is not hooked up to trans. I can start engine and put in gear is there another way to tell by stamping maybe?, There is a faint yellow factory ink stamp on trans.
Will be harder to do but you can turn the flywheel by hand or by the crank bolt if it has one. Remove spark plugs .
