1969 ss 350 x55 code
« on: July 24, 2006, 03:07:32 PM »
I am currently restoring a 69 SS 350 convt. camaro. The original engine and tranny were removed about 20 years ago. This is a x55 code. The vin is 124679n64704 time built is 05C.I want to put the correct time period block, heads, intake, and tranny back into this car.The block casting no. i am looking for is 3956618.The heads im looking for are 3927186.And the intake I need is 3927184.This will put togeather the correct L48 engine but I am not sure of the dates that would be correct for this car. Also does any one know if an M21 was an option for this car?I believe it came with an M20.One more question if im not pushing my luck already, what should the tranny be dated?  Thanks for your help.

No M21's in small block SS's ony M20's.  05C is a bit late for a 618 block, probably want an 010 block with 441 heads,

For what it is worth...I owned a 69 SS350 with Muncie that had a 318 block assembled on 5/17/69.  The body tag was 06A.  Bought the car in 1975, so there was little chance that someone tried to clone or re-stamp the engine.  VIN on oil filter boss matched the car.  Found it when cleaning/detailing the block prior to rebuild in 1977.  Car was sold shortly thereafter to provide funds for college.    Could have been that a few 300/350's were stashed at the plant and installed late?

Regarding the head castings, I believe that a 441 head would have been found on either a 255 horsepower, quadrajet-equipped engine or a 250 horsepower 2-barrel engine and neither of those was available in an SS.  Rather than a 441, should not the correct numbers be 041 or 186?

Yes - L-48's used both 041 and 186 heads (with 1.94"/1.5" valves, not with 2.02"/1.6" valves).
