Early 68' RS Grill Attaching Screws
« on: August 26, 2012, 05:28:19 PM »
My RS/SS is a 10B build.  In the AIM, Pg 424, Z22 / A4, it shows:
6 = Screw #9419303
8 = Nut #9422836
Does anyone have a picture or know what size srew and nut this was?
Early cars used screws and nuts across the bottom of the GRILLE-LOWER (7) to attach to the LOWER VALANCE PANEL
as pictured in the AIM. I believe the nut had a star washer attached too. I appreciate your help!
Regards,
Lane

if it is the same as a 67, the bolts were attached to the grille mldgs. that bolted to the header panel. the grille was riveted to the upper and lower grille mldgs. the lower grille mldg was riveted to the lower valance.

Thanks for your response!! ;D

The AIM for 68 (page 424...Z22 / A4...parts 6 and 8)  showing SCREWS and NUTS attaching lower grill to lower valance.
I want to verify this with someone who has an early 68 RS.
My car is a 10B build.

Thanks again

Not 100% verification...but a clue as to what they might look like...

Hello Jerry,
Thank you for your response !!
You are right, that type of screw and nut were used on 05 (May) 68' build RS Camaro's and later. (approximately).
I am in search of an early build RS using what appears in the 68' AIM... screw and nut assembly......used from approxinately Sept 67-March 68 (09-03 dates), based on research from the CRG Forum.

Lane

Just going by the part numbers you listed....the hardware that is shown in the AMK catalog corresponds with the part numbers you stated in the first post. If the hardware that you are looking for is different than what is described in the AMK catalog, then the hardware you are looking for will have a different part number.  Anytime there was a change of a piece of equipment on the production line, the parts numbers would have changed also.

BTW.....What appears in the drawings in the AIM is not a 100% representation of the parts.  Just because it shows a picture of what looks like a standard nut does not mean the part was in fact a standard nut.  The drawing is only a representation, it could just as well be any form of a nut.  Same way with the screws.

Now if the plant ran out of the appropriate hardware, they could have gone to their local supplier and bought anything they could find.  So....you could possibly have any kind of hardware that would bolt up.

If you have an early original 68 RS front end it would be nice to hear from you on this subject.  A picture would be appreciated too.  Thanks,

Lane....I have been doing some further research about the part numbers from the AIM you quoted in your first post (BTW, my AIM states that the page was released on 06-16-1967 and there are no revisions and it shows the same info that you state).
According to my 1967-1969 Camaro Master Parts Catalog (GM 691A, issue July 1969) those part numbers (8 - #9122836 Nut and 6 - #9419303 Screw) correspond to the part numbers and descriptions in the AMK catalog that I referenced in an earlier post.  I am including some images of the CMPC  pages showing the part numbers.  So if the hardware you are searching for is not the same as described here, I would think that we should then be looking for different part numbers.

8 - #9419303 Screw.......this is a view of the heading of the screw section describing the coding on the screws

This view is a shot of the actual part number listing showing the coding of the screw.....refer to the first image to decipher the coding.

6 - #9422836 Nut.....this is a view of the J/U Nut and the nut listing.

Jerry

When I try your links all I get is an error message.  This link http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1087.msg7557#msg7557 discusses the possible change in parts (such as a shortage) without a part number.

Steve...That was what I stated earlier, If they ran out of their supply of the right parts then you could possibly have had anything installed on your car.  I was just trying to show him what the official part numbers were and what they looked like by using the CMPC.  The AIM pictures aren't exactly drawn to perfection.

This is what Lane asked in the first post and I was trying to show him what he requested.
My RS/SS is a 10B build.  In the AIM, Pg 424, Z22 / A4, it shows:

Those links were working last night.....I'll have to see what happened and post later.

Those were PDF files...maybe you don't have a PDF viewer.  Will have to convert them to JPG's.

I have 2 original 9419303 screws. I'll try to take photos but I'm recovering from surgery so it might be a couple days. They're short hex head screw with an indented head. Probably 1/4" socket for the head but I'll check it out.

I'll look for the 9422836 nuts some more. I couldn't find any in my storage boxes.

Jerry G. and Martin....
Thank you for taking your time to help.  I would like to see all of the pics and info!!
Jerry, I could not open pics either. (I do have a reader ;D)
I do not disagree with the thought that the "screw and nut" could be a different configuration than what is showing in the AIM but I would like to see a picture or two of a 9, 10 or 11 month 67',  RS build,  lower grill assembly.
Martin, please send me those pics when you are feeling better.
Regards,
Lane

The screw has a pointed tip so that would match the use of a u-nut.

Lane....If you get some good photos of the hardware you want then you can probably find it in the AMK catalog.  BTW...are you trying to get your hardware matched to those certain dates for show car purposes?  If so, then maybe a call to some of the judges might put you on the right track.

Found out why the links didn't work.....I accidentally moved my photos over to another section of Google (I thought I copied them but instead I moved them) after I posted the links here.  I will correct all my boo boos tomorrow.

Lane.....Been doing some looking today and found a 03D car with a couple of photos that show something.

This photo shows that the #6 screw and #8 nut, shown on the AIM, were only used on the two end holes.  If you look at the left side of the photo you can see the left side of the grille setting on top of a U-Nut (#8) that is attached to the valence panel....this is where the screw (#6) is inserted.  Then you can look toward the center of the photo and see the heads of two screws that are attaching the grille to the valence.....but you can't see the nuts underneath.  Apparently these are the screws and nuts you are in question about and they don't show up anywhere on the AIM, that I can find anyway.

This photo is a closer view of the two screws....looks to me that they are phillips head screws of some type.

This is all I have found today...maybe some one else will see this and take a photo of the nuts underneath.  But this could also be a collision repair.....don't know for sure.

BTW.....we need to give Lucas Restorations credit for these photos.  If you want to see the whole gallery of the restoration of this car then go to this link.  Look for Jay's 68  SS-RS (1), (2), (3), & (4)  Well, if you want, you can look at all of them.

Just for comparison, here is a photo of a 05A car using what appears to me to be U-Nut and screw arrangement.  Looks to me that the setup shown is using smaller screws and U-Nuts than the two end holes.

I have a 68 but it's not an RS. I gathered lots of fasteners for my restoration.
