Original style exhaust system for 67ssrs?
« on: July 22, 2006, 02:54:02 AM »
I have a 67 ssrs which is mostly original, including the engine 350/295.  My exhaust system is wrong and I want to replace it with an original style (transverse muffler) system.  Any comments on brands, fit, quality of aftermarket exhausts would be appreciated.  I don't want anything too loud, nor anything too quiet (I know these are subjective).  I have heard D&R and Walker sell good replacements.

Last year I replaced the dual exhaust that was on my 69 RS with a stainless exhaust manufactured by Stainless Works and purchased through Summit Racing.  Very nice system.  The tail pipe from the back of the wheel well area is polished chrome over the stainless.  This particular exhaust system was designed by Stainless Works to be a bolt in replacement for the original and was designed to bolt up to stock exhaust manifolds.  I also believe they make a system(s) for header applications.  Unit fits nice under the car and mated up well with the hanger locations.  Pipes are mandrel bent.  Muffler is not loud, but is not stock quiet - I was looking for a little throatiness and it sounds pretty good.  Standing behind the car you wouldn't suspect a base 327 under the hood.

Pic shows fit of transverse muffler and tail pipes with the polished exhaust tips.

There is nothing like a Gardner system... they fit with no cutting, bending, hammering, etc...

I have a Stainless Works system that I purchased many, many years ago.  The fit was perfect and it is louder than stock, but not too much.  If you are looking to go stainless, I would suggest this system.

I had a 67 SS/RS in 67. The correct system would have had 2 seperate runs (true dual) from the exh. man through to the transverse muffler. However, there were 2 resonators in the system just before the pipes went over the rear the axle, on either side of the driveshaft. I believe Ground Up Restorations sells such a system, with and w/o resonators. I'm restoring my 67 and plan on going with the resonators. Good Luck!
