Convertible x codes
« on: August 11, 2012, 01:33:51 PM »
Do all big block convertibles built within the "x code range" have either x-22 or x-66 on the trim tag notwithstanding pace cars?

FYI... My 04d (with 04L on the trim tag) has no x code on the trim tag but it is a small block non style trim car.

Looked at a 04c small block convertible this week with x11 on the trim tag in keeping with the style trim installed on the car.

Thanks

Lawrence

GMAD Los Angeles plant assembled vehicles had no X codes on the tag. Norwood had them on the tags after December 12B build dates, and noted that"A few mid-year 69's, mostly convertibles, did not have X-codes stamped on the cowl tag. It is unknown why the code was not stamped on the tag."

For some reason it is not at all unusual for a Norwood convert to be missing the X code. Starts early spring and runs to the end of production. No discernable pattern; some just do not have it.

However none of the several dozen examples in the db were submitted as SS cars with 396 engines.

The alpha-numeric scheduling code Van Nuys used did include X but had no bearing on build configuration.

I should have mentioned excluding LA cars. I know they don't have x codes. I am just trying to figure out if SS 350 or SS 396's had x codes anytime during the year.

So William you don't have any SS Convertible cars in the DB with x codes?

I believe what he is saying is that non of the "non x code" convertibles in the database were submitted as an ss car with a 396 engine.

The db isn't big enough to draw conclusions. We have several X22, X55, X66 converts. None of the blank tag cars are 396 SS cars. One may be an L48 SS.

Starting the second week of Dec 1968 (12B) the X code was used. All 396 SS cars from Norwood plant had an X code X22 or X66 starting on that date. Convertible Camaros after that date without the X code were low horse cars ie 307, etc..    However, it is possible to have an exception...  Please read this http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#POPCodes
