decode help - new to Camaro Z11 1969 pace car with 396
« on: August 06, 2012, 06:03:22 PM »
A friend just bought a 69 Z11 pace car. Convertible.

Z11 on cowl tag
has the right style body number
It has the 12 bolt rear
Has exhaust hanger on the frame for dual exhaust
Has the SS and 396 badges
Has the right paint and interior ... White 50 and hounds tooth 720 codes for a z11 Norwood car
4 speed

I'm a Buick GS guy so my Chevy motor identification skills are limited in determining a 350 or 396 and if it's numbers matching

The only number I can find in front of the passenger head is 11206JB

I found JB means 396ci/325HP L35
But not sure where the VIN should be to see if its matching

I appreciate any help

Welcome!  For the 1969 model year, the partial VIN for V8 engines was stamped in either of two locations: on the engine pad or near the oil filter.  The following link explains the details...

Thanks Paul!
The VIN was not on the top of the block so when we get this car back home I'll check by the Oil filter
 (from the link above)

11206JB is probably T1206J, which is a L35 (396/325) with a manual transmission assembled on December 6th, 1968 at the Tonawanda, NY engine plant. What's the build date on the trim tag (and the VIN)?

Thanks Ed
Build date is 02D
4th week of Feb, which was the first week of production for the Z11 cars.

Curtis, what's the VIN? That suffix date (December 6th) is a little too early for a 02D car, so it's probably not the original, but without knowing the VIN (and verifying it on the block), we can't be sure.

124679N612251 lines up nicely with 02D, but I don't think that engine (or at least that block) is original to that car. We have a couple of other L35's in the database during that same time period and they're dated much closer to the build date of the car than that. Check for the VIN anyway. You never know!

your VIN is a couple hundred before my 02D.  Cowl tag number from NOR is more than that, significantly, but they weren't in order.

I posted this over at Camaros.net, but will post here for people not on both threads...

I think we have a match
Car VIN ends in 612251
I can make out the 9N6
and the 251 last 3 digits, the rest is faint.  But looks like a match.

Hope to have the car on a lift in a couple weeks to check it further and find the trans stamping

That is an L35/396, just has aftermarket Valve Covers and Carb.   Also an added bonus it looks like most of the Smog equipment is intact.

Just an update on the car
A few weeks ago I got the car running
New oil, old oil was actually not bad and still kinda clear
Ran a fuel line from a gas container
Let it turn over to build some oil pressure
some starting fluid and it started right up.
Purred like a kitten.

We did not run it for long, just a minute or so.
No smoke, no concerning noises.  It was a happy day

Since that time the gas tank was dropped and cleaned, new fuel pump.
Rear end fluid was changed
Manual trans fluid was changed
Coolant was changed

Brakes are being worked on now
Drive time will come soon!
