4 clip trim ring
« on: July 25, 2012, 01:53:26 AM »
My car should have the 4 clip trim ring but does anyone actually use them? Sounds like they won't stay on and I should just find the later set?

IMHO Get both sets. :)
use  the suicide original 4 clip design ones at shows, and use the second after recall clips all the way around design for daily driving.

I will end up with 2 sets of wheels. Sounds like I better not put the 4 clips on until I am parked!

??? I have never had a 4-clip trim ring come off even when driving my Z/28 hard "back in the day". Am I missing something?

No Jon,  all I've ever ran are the 4 clip trim rings, and neither have I had one come off..  NOR am I aware of anyone who had one come off.   The first I've heard of this *problem* is in the thread here recently.   I'd suspect the 'finger type' to be more susceptible to coming off than the 4 clip type..

Yep, they are a real bear to get off! In fact, how many of us have found them with dings from people (me included back when) taking them off? I use them with no issues and would not want to be taking them off and on.
Had to smile when I read Jon's note thinking about how we just beat the crap out of those cars and never saw a ring go flying off. And ticket free? How'd we do dat?????

Why two sets of rims? Only need the second set of rings.

I also run the 4 clip ring and have not had an issue with any of them coming off.

I have not driven my car for decades, but the original owner did. When I got the car with 47k it still had 3 of the 4 clip rings on it. I found 1 more 4 clip design and have put almost 800 miles on them with no issues. Lane68 is right though they take extra care to pop them off. Bill, unless your looking at some serious judging, do what makes you happy.....

I have a set of repro 4-clip trim rings and they have never come off without me pulling on them. Go ahead and run them!

I have never seen one that actually came off while driving.
Yes, they are a bear to get off sometimes.
My only real beef with them when I was a mechanic, was that the clips sometimes were right where you wanted to put a wheel weight.  You would have to rebalance the wheel using two smaller weights spaced away from the clip location.

Lynn,

I agree. . THAT is the only issue with the 4 clips, and I suspect that and cost might be why GM changed their design, .. the 4 clip style uses a steel insert with the four clips, inside the wrapped stainless trim, whereas the later design was formed completely from SS...
