Believe all the 3881339 clips in kits have a type of reddish clay color clip but most restorations observed have that clip
painted black. What was the correct color?

Went through our clips and found one that you could clearly see was phosphate.
Were there differences depending on where they were used, i.e. gas vs. brake?

I'm in the same situation too with my current 67 NOR conv restoration and the clips I got from In-Line. I have the original ones I took off in the 80's and those that are in fair shape to display a finish show no red color. But that's not to say it hasn't faded but I would think the rear parts that are against the chassis would retain something.
My 67 LOS survivor that has original fuel and brake clips preserver in a layer of grime are clearly phosphated. I may take the repo ones and glass bead then phosphate
unless there are others here who can say they have seen colored ones.
