It's just a double-groove alternator pulley but I don't know what it was used on originally. You can see in the 1968 photo the car had the usual large diameter single-groove pulley that came stock on the Z/28s and it was running a smog pump and exhaust manifolds back then also. Now there are headers and no smog pump.

Here is a cool picture taken by Dave Friedman at the Glen 500 Trans Am race at Watkins Glen, New York on August 10, 1969.  It shows a neat Chevy Camaro Z28 advertising sign located in the pits just above the Penske Camaro.  Does anyone know what the rest of the tagline says? It is part of the Dave Friedman Collection at The Henry Ford.  See a larger and clearer version here: http://thehenryford.artehouse.com/perl/magnify_popup.pl?imageID=178510&staticImage=C&ckon=image&alt=0

You're welcome, Scott. The photo below shows the part of the sign (far left) that was missing from your previous photo.

Scott, the date of the photo is correct and taken from the issue of Competition Press & Autoweek that it was found in. The first appearance of the cowl induction hood was on the 1 of 1 '68 Z/28 convertible owned by Chevrolet's Pete Estes. That hood was probably put on the car by the GM Tech Center and not as a production line component but it was present on the car when it paced the '68 Can-Am race at Road America. The second application of the cowl hood that I have seen is on the car shown in the Berger ad. This was a car used by Chevrolet for its new car introductions for '69 and it appeared in a large number of road tests in the fall of '68 as well as some print ads. You are correct that the first use of the cowl induction hood as a production line component was at the end of December '68 when they made their debut on the ZL-1 Camaros.
RE: ZL2
There is a highly documented hugger orange LA Z28 built 2nd or 3rd week dec with ZL2 and paper out the rear... it is now the earliest known ZL2 accompanied by supporting docs.

I just found this cool ad for the 1969 Javelin race team.  It looks to be on the backside of the cover of the 1969 Road America June Sprints race program.  It is currently for sale on Ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1969-ROAD-AMERICA-June-Sprints-PROGRAM-Elkhart-Lake-WI-SCCA-Paul-Newman/162692702339?hash=item25e13da083:g:fV8AAOSwpaxZ0BVo

Here is an advertisement for the Parish Oil Co., Inc. featuring the Mark Donahue driven #6 1970 Penske Sunoco Javelin.  It appeared in the souvenir program for the 1970 rainout edition of the Modified Sportsman 150 held at Oswego Speedway, Oswego, New York.
